Western Philatelic Library
{{notablity, date=January 2017 The Western Philatelic Library is located in Redwood City, California. History The library was founded in 1969 and is chapter 836 of the American Philatelic Society. The library has been designated an official project of Save America's Treasures. In 2014, the library moved to 3004 Spring Street in Redwood City. Legal status The library is registered with the United States Internal Revenue Service as a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation and donations are treated as a charitable deduction for the purposes of United States Federal Income Tax. Philately (; ) is the study of postage stamps and postal history. It also refers to the collection and appreciation of stamps and other philatelic products. Philately involves more than just stamp collecting or the study of postage; it is possible to be a philatelist without owning any stamps. For instance, the stamps being studied may be very rare or reside only in museums. Etymology The word "philately" is the English transliteration of the French "", coined by Georges Herpin in 1864. Redwood City, California
Redwood City is a city on the San Francisco Peninsula in Northern California's Bay Area, approximately south of San Francisco, and northwest of San Jose. Redwood City's history spans its earliest inhabitation by the Ohlone people to being a port for lumber and other goods. American Philatelic Society
The American Philatelic Society (APS) is the largest nonprofit stamp collecting foundation of philately in the world. Both the membership and interests of the society are worldwide. History The organization, originally named the ''American Philatelic Association'', was established on September 14, 1886 in New York City, and the following day elected John K. Tiffany as its first president. Voting membership was granted to 219 individuals who paid two bits (25¢) for the privilege. The organization's name was changed to its present name for a few months in 1897, then back, then permanently in 1908. Society membership reached over 4,000 in 1940, and included U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt and his Secretary of the Interior Harold L. Ickes. Save America's Treasures is a United States federal government initiative to preserve and protect historic buildings, arts, and published works. It is a public–private partnership between the U.S. National Park Service and the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Hiram Edmund Deats
Hiram Edmund Deats (May 20, 1870 – March 16, 1963) was an American Philately, philatelist, historian and publisher from Flemington, New Jersey, Flemington, Hunterdon County, New Jersey. He was especially acclaimed for his collection of revenue stamps. Life and family Hiram Edmund Deats was born on May 20, 1870, in the Brookville, Hunterdon County, New Jersey, Brookville section of Stockton, New Jersey, Stockton to Hiram Deats (1810–1887) and Elmira Stevenson (1830–1908). In 1929, he donated several pieces of agricultural equipment made by the Deats company, started by his father, to Rutgers University under the care of Professor Wabun C. Krueger. This collection, including the Deats plow, patented by his grandfather, John Deats, became important in the creation of the New Jersey Museum of Agriculture in 1990. He died on March 16, 1963. Collectors Club Of New York
The Collectors Club, often referred to as the Collectors Club of New York, is a private club and philatelic society in New York City. Founded in 1896, it is one of the oldest existing philatelic societies in the United States. Its stated purpose is "to further the study of philately, promote the hobby and provide a social, educational, and non-commercial setting for the enthusiastic enjoyment of our common passion".
