Western New Mexico University
Western New Mexico University is a public university in Silver City, New Mexico. It was founded in 1893. History Founded in the Territory of New Mexico on February 11, 1893 as the New Mexico Normal School, the school began to offer classes on September 3, 1894, in a rented Presbyterian church. On June 2, 1893, the nascent board of regents accepted of Town of Silver City land situated on a hillside overlooking the town donated by Regent, and Mayor Town of Silver City, Colonel John W. Fleming. In November 1896, the school's first permanent building, Old Main, was dedicated, and within twenty years enrollment had reached nearly 500 students. Tammie Jo Shults
Tammie Jo Shults (born Bonnell; born November 2, 1961) is an American retired commercial airline captain, author, and former naval aviator. Known for being one of the first female fighter pilots to serve in the United States Navy, following active duty she became a pilot for Southwest Airlines. She retired from Southwest Airlines in 2020. On April 17, 2018, as captain of Southwest Airlines Flight 1380, she safely landed a Boeing 737-700 after the aircraft suffered an uncontained engine failure with debris causing rapid decompression of the aircraft. Early life Tammie Jo Bonnell was born on November 2, 1961, and grew up on a ranch near Tularosa, New Mexico. Mescalero
Mescalero or Mescalero Apache ( apm, Naa'dahéńdé) is an Apache tribe of Southern Athabaskan–speaking Native Americans. The tribe is federally recognized as the Mescalero Apache Tribe of the Mescalero Apache Reservation, located in south-central New Mexico. In the 19th century, the Mescalero opened their reservation to other Apache tribes, such as the Mimbreno (Chíhéńde, Warm Springs Apaches) and the Chiricahua (Shá'i'á-ńde or Chidikáágu). Some Lipan Apache (Tú 'édì-néńde and Tú ntsaa-ńde) also joined the reservation. Their descendants are enrolled in the Mescalero Apache Tribe. Carleton Naiche-Palmer
Carleton A. Naiche-Palmer (June 22, 1947 – December 12, 2010) was elected president of the Mescalero Apache Tribe in 2008. He served one term, until early 2010. Biography Early life and education Carleton Naiche-Palmer was born in 1947. He was a descendant of the Chiricahua Apache leaders Naiche and Cochise. Naiche-Palmer's father, Ignacius Palmer, was an artist. Naiche-Palmer held a bachelor's degree in business from Western New Mexico University, a master's degree in business from Pepperdine University and a doctorate in social and economic development from Arbor University. Henry C. "Howie" Morales (born January 5, 1973) is an American politician and educator serving as the 30th lieutenant governor of New Mexico. Ken Brewer
Kenneth Wayne Brewer (November 28, 1941 – March 15, 2006) was an American poet and longtime scholar who resided in Utah, where he served as Poet Laureate. Born in Indianapolis, Indiana, he attended Butler University and Western New Mexico University in the 1960s, then earned a master's degree in English literature from New Mexico State University, followed by a Ph.D. from the University of Utah, where he worked with Pulitzer Prize winner Henry Taylor, in 1973. Since that time he taught a wide variety of courses at Utah State University, concentrating on mentoring creative writers at the graduate level, while publishing prolifically and speaking extensively. He died after a nine-month battle with pancreatic cancer. Richard Angulo (born August 13, 1980) is an American football coach and former tight end who is the tight ends coach for the Jacksonville Jaguars of the National Football League (NFL). Vernon D. Asbill (born April 11, 1945) is an American politician and educator who served as a member of the New Mexico Senate for the 34th district from 2005 to 2013. Early life and education Asbill was born in San Angelo, Texas, and raised in Sterling City, Texas. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in education from McMurry College and a Master of Business Administration with an emphasis in education administration from Western New Mexico University.
