Western High School (New Mexico)
Western High School was a building located in Silver City, New Mexico. It was the former location of Silver High School before the current location of Silver High School was built. History Silver City, was founded in 1870. The first public school opened in 1874. On February 11, 1893, when the Thirtieth Session of the Territorial Legislature of New Mexico passed "An Act to Establish and Provide for the Maintenance and Government of the Normal Schools of New Mexico." The location of the school was chosen on a hill so that people coming to town could see the school clearly. In 1918, the first high school was opened, and was part of the Normal School. In the 1920s, the New Mexico Normal School became the New Mexico State Teachers' College. The regents made the High School a separate department of the school. Silver City, New Mexico
Silver City is a town in Grant County, New Mexico, United States. It is the county seat and the home of Western New Mexico University. As of the 2010 census the population was 10,315. As of the 2020 census, the population was 9,704. History The valley that is now the site of Silver City once served as an Apache campsite. With the arrival of the Spaniards, the area became known for its copper mining. After the American Civil War, a settlement developed and became known as "La Ciénega de San Vicente" (the Oasis of St. Vincent). With a wave of American prospectors, the pace of change increased, and Silver City was founded in the summer of 1870. The founding of the town occurred shortly after the discovery of silver ore deposits at Chloride Flat, on the hill just west of the farm of Captain John M. Bullard and his brother James. Silver High School (Silver City, NM)
Silver High School is a high school in Silver City, New Mexico. The school was opened in its current location in 1967. It was previously known as Western High School and was part of Western New Mexico University. History In 1949, New Mexico State Teachers College became New Mexico Western College. At the same time, the name of the high school was changed to Western High. In 1960, the school became under the authority of the Silver City Board of Education. At that time, the school's name was changed from Western High School to Silver High School. Construction In 1966, the present high school building was opened on 32nd street and Silver streets. The dedication for the new building was held on Sunday, October 29, 1967, at 2:30 p.m., where Superintendent John H. Gaines presided. The school's construction had ended the summer before. At the time, the present enrollment of Silver High was 568 for the 10th, 11th and 12th grades, which was a 15% increase from the year before. The n ... Silver City Daily Press
The ''Silver City Daily Press and Independent'' is a six-day daily newspaper that serves the Silver City, New Mexico area of the United States. Founded in 1896 as the weekly ''Silver City Independent'', the paper was purchased by the Ely family in 1934. In 1935, Colonel Clyde Ely renamed the paper the ''Silver City Daily Press and Independent'' and converted it into a daily newspaper. In 2007, the newspaper received the Mark Twain Award from the New Mexico Associated Press Managing Editors for their outstanding member cooperation in 2006. Since the 2008 recession, the newspaper has outsourced its printing, increased its online presence, discontinued its membership in the Associated Press and joined an 11-member New Mexico newspaper exchange. The name, archives and website of the Daily Press were purchased by the Silver City Independent Publishing Company, LLC, in April, 2014, marking its first non-Ely family ownership since its conversion to a daily newspaper.
