Boundaries for the locality were created on 16 March 2000 for the “long established name.” Its name is ultimately derived from the ‘Western Flat Run’ pastoral lease which was established in 1868 by T. Brown. The land use in the locality is ‘primary production’. The 2016 Australian census which was conducted in August 2016 reports that Western Flat had a population of 121 people. MacKillop is a single-member electoral district for the South Australian House of Assembly. It was named in 1991 after Sister Mary MacKillop who served the local area, and later became the first Australian to be canonised as a Roman Catholic saint. 2016 Australian Census
The 2016 Australian census was the 17th national population census held in Australia. The census was officially conducted with effect on Tuesday, 9 August 2016. The total population of the Commonwealth of Australia was counted as – an increase of 8.8 per cent or people over the .
