Western Downs Regional Council
Western Downs Region is a local government area in Queensland, Australia. The Western Downs Regional Council manages an area of , which is slightly smaller than Switzerland, although with a population of 34,467 in June 2018, it is over 228 times less densely populated. The area is home to prime farming land and thus agriculture is a major industry in the area. Dalby, the biggest town in the region is home to the second largest cattle saleyards in Australia. The Dalby Saleyards process over 200,000 cattle annually in its facility which is comparable to Rockhampton and Casino. The Shire of Murilla was a local government area located in the Darling Downs region of Queensland, Australia. The shire, administered from the town of Miles, covered an area of , and existed as a local government entity from 1879 until 2008, when it amalgamated with the Town of Dalby and the Shires of Chinchilla, Tara and Wambo and the southern part of Taroom to form the Western Downs Region. The Shire of Chinchilla was a local government area in the Darling Downs region of Queensland, Australia. The shire, administered from the town of Chinchilla, covered an area of , and existed as a local government entity from 1912 until 2008, when it amalgamated with the Town of Dalby and the Shires of Murilla, Tara and Wambo and the southern part of Taroom to form the Western Downs Region. The Town of Dalby was a local government area of Queensland, Australia which managed the affairs of Dalby. It was located north-west of Toowoomba. It was amalgamated into the Western Downs Region in 2008. History Following a petition of residents, the Borough of Dalby was proclaimed a Municipality on 21 August 1863. The first elections for the Dalby Municipal Council held October 1863. On 31 March, the Borough of Dalby became the Town of Dalby under the ''Local Authorities Act 1902''. Darling Downs
The Darling Downs is a farming region on the western slopes of the Great Dividing Range in southern Queensland, Australia. The Downs are to the west of South East Queensland and are one of the major regions of Queensland. The name was generally applied to an area approximating to that of the Condamine River catchment upstream of Condamine township but is now applied to a wider region comprising the Southern Downs, Western Downs, Toowoomba and Goondiwindi local authority areas. The name Darling Downs was given in 1827 by Allan Cunningham, the first European explorer to reach the area and recognises the then Governor of New South Wales, Ralph Darling. Tara is a rural town and locality in the Western Downs Region, Queensland, Australia. In the , the locality of Tara had a population of 1,980 people. Geography Tara is on the Darling Downs. The Baruŋgam are an Aboriginal Australian people of Southeast Queensland. Language The earliest wordlist of the Barunggam language was compiled by Harriott Barlow, from Warkon Station on the Balonne River, and which was published in 1873. Country The Baruŋgam had an estimated of tribal land in Queensland's Western Downs Region, reaching from the headwaters of the Condamine River east of Jackson to the vicinity of Dalby. Their southeastern neighbours were the Jarowair. The northeastern border with the Wakawaka lay around Charley Creek across to the Great Dividing Range, while its westward extension went to the area of Wongorgera and Woleebee, beyond which were the Mandandanji.
