Western Australian Of The Year Awards
The Western Australian of the Year Awards (previously the WA Citizen Of The Year Awards) are annually awarded to seven individuals who have made an outstanding and enduring contribution to the advancement of the state and people of Western Australia through their chosen field of endeavour. An overall winner is chosen from the recipients of each category award. The awards have been given every year since 1973. The awards were originally known as the WA Citizen Of The Year Awards, and included categories for organisations as well as individuals. The awards were renamed in 2012, when Foundation Day was renamed to Western Australia Day. Worthy individuals and organisations may be nominated by fellow West Australians and cannot nominate themselves. Western Australia (commonly abbreviated as WA) is a state of Australia occupying the western percent of the land area of Australia excluding external territories. Historical Encyclopedia Of Western Australia
The ''Historical Encyclopedia of Western Australia'' (HEWA) from the Centre for Western Australian History at the University of Western Australia was published in June 2009. Although work on it started in 2003, the idea within the university for an historical encyclopedia of Western Australia dates to the early 1990s. Sir Charles Walter Michael Court, (29 September 1911 – 22 December 2007) was a Western Australian politician, and the 21st Premier of Western Australia from 1974 to 1982. He was a member of the Liberal Party. Early life Court's family emigrated from his birthplace Crawley, Sussex, England, to Perth when he was 6 months old. He went to primary school in Leederville, and then to Perth Boys School. His Salvation Army parents induced him to play the cornet in their Sunday parades and he became a proficient player. He began formal music training at 12 and became a member of the RSL Memorial Band. He also inherited a strong union background from his father, a plumber, and joined the Musicians Union at the age of 14, playing in annual May Day parades. In 1930 he competed in the national band competition held in Tanunda and won the brass solo competition, the "Champion of Champions". Timothy John Winton (born 4 August 1960) is an Australian writer. He has written novels, children's books, non-fiction books, and short stories. Fiona Wood
Fiona Melanie Wood (born 2 February 1958) is an English-born Australian plastic surgeon working in Perth, Western Australia. She is the director of the Royal Perth Hospital burns unit and the Western Australia Burns Service. In addition, Wood is also a clinical professor with the School of Paediatrics and Child Health at the University of Western Australia and director of the McComb Research Foundation. Early life and education Wood was born in Yorkshire, England, 2 February 1958. She attended Ackworth School near Pontefract, West Yorkshire. Walter "Wally" John Foreman (5 January 19482 November 2006) was a sports administrator and commentator for ABC Radio program "Grandstand" based in Perth, Western Australia. Life Born in Kalgoorlie, Western Australia but raised in Bruce Rock, Foreman worked in the sports media for more than 30 years. He started his career in the media when he was a journalist at the '' West Australian'' newspaper in 1972 and joined the ABC Sports Department in 1975.
