Westerlo
Westerlo () is a municipality located in the Belgian province of Antwerp. The municipality comprises seven towns: * Westerlo centrum * * Tongerlo * Heultje * Voortkapel * Oosterwijk * In 2021, Westerlo had a total population of 25,288. The total area is 55.13 km². Places of interest * Castle of Westerlo has been in the possession of the House of Merode uninterruptedly since the late 15th century. It has served as the most important country estate of the senior branch since the 16th century. In 1910-12 Countess Jeanne de Merode built a new neogothic castle for herself which serves as the town hall of Westerlo since the 1970s. *Tongerlo Abbey contains a very old and fine copy of Leonardo da Vinci's ''The Last Supper''. It is also known as home of the Tongerlo Abbey beer, but this is no longer brewed at the abbey. Lords Of Westerlo
The Lords of Westerlo were the feudal lords of the fiefdom (called 'Heerlijkheid' in Dutch or 'Seigneurie' in French) of Westerlo until the abolition of feudalism in 1795. The first known Lord of Westerlo was the Frankish nobleman Ansfried of Utrecht who gave this domain as allodial title to the chapters of Saint-Martin and Saint-Salvator in Utrecht after he became Bishop of Utrecht in 995. Since the late 15th century the Lords of Westerlo have been members of the House of Merode. In 1626 Westerlo was elevated to the rank of marquessate by King Philip IV of Spain in favor of Philippe I de Merode who became the first Marquess of Westerlo. The chief of the House of Merode stil bears the title of Marquess of Westerlo although the feudal rights attached to this title have been abolished since 1795. House Of Merode
The House of Merode is one of the most prominent families of the Belgian nobility. The House of Merode originates from the village of Merode (today in the municipality of Langerwehe, Germany). Over the last five centuries different branches bore noble titles and had estates on the territories of the modern states of Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, France and Austria. Through marriage the house is connected with many prominent European noble families. The House of Merode played an important role in the history of the Southern Netherlands and the Kingdom of Belgium. The surname of the family and the name of the house is nowadays mostly written de Mérode (in French). The name is also spelled de Merode or van Merode in Dutch and von Merode in German. Castle Of Westerlo
On the territory of the municipality of Westerlo (Westerloo, using the old spelling) there are several castles. Castle of the Princes de Mérode Locals call it "Oud Kasteel" (Old Castle) () to discern it from the new castle built for Jeanne de Merode in 1910-12 (see below). The castle has been the home of the House of Merode for more than five centuries. The central keep or Donjon has walls of more than 2 m thick. I was built by the lords of Wesemael in local brown stone in the late 14th century. It probably replaced an older fortress on the same spot. Other parts of the building are believed to date from the 15th and 16th century. The castle was adapted, extended and renovated several times. From the 16th century onwards it was transformed into a more luxurious noble dwelling and gradually lost its fortified character. Jean Philippe Eugène De Mérode
Jean-Philippe-Eugène, Count de Mérode, 5th Marquess of Westerloo (22 June 1674 in Brussels – 12 September 1732 in Merode castle) was a Belgian soldier and ''Feldmarschall'' of the Holy Roman Empire and a prominent member of the House of Merode. In Flemish and Dutch sources he is known as Jan Filip van Merode-Westerloo. Jean-Philippe-Eugène de Merode was the only surviving child of Maximilian de Merode and Isabella-Margaretha de Merode. His father died one year after his birth and his mother remarried with the Joachim Ernest II, Duke of Schleswig-Holstein-Rethwisch. This was an army commander who guided Jean-Philippe towards a military career. At the age of five Jean-Philippe was already present at the siege of Oran in North Africa. Tongerlo
Tongerlo is a village and ''deelgemeente'' (sub-municipality) of the municipality of Westerlo in the province of Antwerp, Belgium. The village is located about south-east of the city of Herentals. Tongerlo is best known for Tongerlo Abbey founded in 1128 which became one of the most important abbeys of Belgium. History In 1128, the Premonstratensian abbey of Tongerlo was founded in the village of Tongerlo. It was double monastery until 1140. The abbey developed into one of the most important abbeys of Belgium. The abbot became the Lord of the village ''heerlijkheid'' (landed estate), and used to have joint judicial powers. In 1644, the abbey bought full judicial powers for the ''heerlijkheid''. The power of the abbey started to decline after 1773. Tongerlo Abbey
Tongerlo Abbey is a Premonstratensian monastery at Tongerlo in Westerlo near Antwerp, Belgium. History It was founded in 1128 in honour of the Blessed Virgin Mary, by Giselbert of Kasterlee, who not only gave the land, but also himself became a lay brother in the new community. The first monks were sent from St. Michael's Abbey, Antwerp, under Henry, who had come with Saint Norbert, founder of the Premonstratensian Order, to Antwerp to extirpate the Tanchelmite heresies. The charter of its foundation was signed, amongst others, by Bernard of Clairvaux and by Waltman, first abbot of Antwerp. The Bishop of Cambrai granted synodal rights to the abbots. From small beginnings the abbey became influential in the district called Campine, now in north-east Belgium and the south of the Netherlands, then a wild area. Geel () is a city located in the Belgian province of Antwerp, which acquired city status in the 1980s. It comprises Central-Geel which is constituted of 4 old parishes a/o towns: Sint-Amand, Sint-Dimpna, Holven and Elsum.
