Westeinderplassen
The Westeinderplassen ("West End Lakes") are a complex of lakes belonging mostly to the territory of Aalsmeer, Netherlands. Their total area is about 2, making it the largest freshwater body of water in the Randstad area. Geography Towns situated on the lakefront include Aalsmeer, Kudelstaart, Burgerveen, Leimuiden, and Rijsenhout. The northern part in particular contains hundreds of small islands. Many of these are privately owned and can only be reached by boat. Aalsmeer
Aalsmeer () is a municipality and a town in the Netherlands, in the province of North Holland. Its name is derived from the Dutch for eel (''aal'') and lake (''meer''). Aalsmeer is bordered by the Westeinderplassen lake, the largest open water of the Randstad, and the Ringvaart Canal. The town is located 13 km (8 mi) southwest of Amsterdam. The town is sometimes referred to as the flower capital of the world, as the largest flower auction in the world is based in Aalsmeer, along with numerous nurseries and an experimental station for floriculture. Kudelstaart
Kudelstaart is a town in the Dutch province of North Holland. It is a part of the municipality of Aalsmeer, and lies about 10 km southeast of Hoofddorp. The village was first mentioned in 1237 as Sconedorpe. The current name is a combination of "fish net" and "long, thin piece of land". Kudelstaart developed around 1200 as a peat excavation settlement. In the 13th century, it was split between Holland and Utrecht. In 1724, the ''heerlijkheid'' was bought by the city of Amsterdam. Geography Kudelstaart lies on the Westeinderplassen, a large complex of lakes. Economy Like in neighbouring Aalsmeer, greenhouse-based agriculture is very important to the local economy. Leimuiden
Leimuiden is a Dutch village in the South Holland municipality of Kaag en Braassem. Leimuiden is located between the Braassemermeer, the Westeinderplassen and the Ringvaart. Leimuiden is located north of Alphen aan den Rijn. History The village was first mentioned in the first half of the 11th century as Letthemutha, and means "mouth of the Leiden river". Leimuiden is a peat excavation settlement from the Middle Ages. The Dutch Reformed church is an aisleless church with built-in tower with needle spire. It was built in 1805 as a replacement of the 1555 church. It was restored between 1963 and 1965, and a consistory was added. Leimuiden was home to 551 people in 1840. It was a separate municipality until 1991, when it became part of Jacobswoude. The village was part of North Holland until 1865. Rijsenhout is a village in the Netherlands, Dutch province of North Holland. It is a part of the municipality of Haarlemmermeer, and lies about 6 km southeast of Hoofddorp. In 2001, the village of Rijsenhout had 3072 inhabitants. Burgerveen
Burgerveen is a village in the western Netherlands. It is located in the municipality of Haarlemmermeer, North Holland, about halfway between Amsterdam and The Hague. The current village was first mentioned in 1867 as Burgerveen. It is named after the village which was lost in the Haarlemmermeer which was named after the burgrave of Leiden. The old village was abandoned by 1417, and lost in the lake shortly after 1613. Ringvaart
The Ringvaart (known in full as Ringvaart of the Haarlemmermeer Polder) is a canal in the province of North Holland, the Netherlands. The Ringvaart (Dutch meaning "ring canal") is a true circular canal surrounding the Haarlemmermeer polder and forms the boundary of the Haarlemmermeer municipality. Ringvaart is also the name of the dike bordering the canal. Construction of the canal began in 1839 as the first step to reclaim land from Haarlemmermeer (Dutch for Haarlem's Lake). Thousands of laborers dug a canal through the existing land, as much as possible closely following the lake's contour. But at three locations (Vijfhuizen, Lisserbroek, and Huigsloot), the Ringvaart was dug through peninsulas which thereafter became part of Haarlemmermeer.
