Westchester Avenue Station
The Westchester Avenue station is a former railroad station located in the Bronx in New York City, partially suspended over Amtrak's busy Northeast Corridor line. It was built in 1908 with rich terra cotta detailing to a design by Cass Gilbert, who would later employ similar terra cotta detailing in his 1910 design for the Woolworth Building. Train service to the station ceased in 1937, and as of 2022 the station was a ruin in poor condition. The Westchester Avenue station is located just to the southeast of the intersection of Westchester Avenue and Sheridan Boulevard, in the Morrisania section of the South Bronx. The Bronx River is a short distance to the east. The structure consists of a taller entry hall portion that stands on solid ground immediately to the west of the tracks, and a shorter waiting room section that is suspended over the tracks on metal beams. New York, Westchester And Boston Railway
The New York, Westchester and Boston Railway Company (NYW&B, also known to its riders as "the Westchester" and colloquially as the "Boston-Westchester"), was an electric commuter railroad in the Bronx and Westchester County, New York from 1912 to 1937. It ran from the southernmost part of the South Bronx, near the Harlem River, to Mount Vernon with branches north to White Plains and east to Port Chester. From 1906, construction and operation was under the control of the New York, New Haven & Hartford Railroad (NH) until its bankruptcy in 1935. Bronx River Greenway
The Bronx River (), approximately long, flows through southeast New York in the United States and drains an area of . It is named after colonial settler Jonas Bronck. Besides the Hutchinson River, the Bronx River is the only fresh water river in New York City.; all the other rivers within the city are straits and tidal estuaries, and the tidal lower reach of the Hudson River. It originally rose in what is now the Kensico Reservoir, in Westchester County north of New York City. With the construction of the Kensico Dam in 1885, however, the river was cut off from its natural headwaters and today a small tributary stream serves as its source. Concrete Plant Park
Concrete Plant Park is a public park in the Longwood section of the Bronx, New York City. It consists of located on the west bank of the Bronx River between Westchester Avenue and Bruckner Boulevard. The centerpiece and namesake of the park is a group of restored structures from the concrete plant which once occupied its site. It is maintained by the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation. History and description The Transit-Mix Corporation operated a concrete plant on the site from the late 1940s through its abandonment in 1987, according to NYC Parks, although the city's land records indicate the property was foreclosed for non-payment of taxes in 1981. In 2000, the property was transferred to NYC Parks, which formed a partnership with community organizations, including the Bronx River Alliance, to design and construct the park.
