West Virginia's 6th Senate District
West Virginia's 6th Senate district is one of 17 districts in the West Virginia Senate. It is currently represented by Republicans Mark Maynard and Chandler Swope. All districts in the West Virginia Senate elect two members to staggered four-year terms. District 6 is currently the most Republican-leaning district in the Senate. Geography District 6 stretches along the state's southwestern border, covering all of Mercer County and parts of McDowell, Mingo, and Wayne Counties. It includes the communities of Bluefield, Princeton, Bluewell, Athens, Welch, Williamson, and Gilbert Creek. The district is located entirely within West Virginia's 1st congressional district, and overlaps with the 29th, 34th, 36th, 37th, 38th, 39th, and 41st districts of the West Virginia House of Delegates. Williamson, West Virginia
Williamson is a city in Mingo County, West Virginia, United States, situated along the Tug Fork River. The population was 3,191 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Mingo County, and is the county's largest and most populous city. Williamson is home to Southern West Virginia Community and Technical College. The Tug Fork River separates Williamson from South Williamson, Kentucky. Williamson is the site of a large rail yard built by the former Norfolk and Western Railroad (now Norfolk Southern Railway), which was built to service the many coal mines of the region. The city is protected by a floodwall, completed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in 1991 in response to devastating floods along the Tug Fork River in 1977 and again in 1984. The wall incorporates floodgates along major access points which, when locked, form a solid barrier against floodwaters. Bill Cole (West Virginia Politician)
William Paul Cole III (born May 16, 1956) is an American businessman, politician and a former Republican member of the West Virginia Senate, representing the 6th district from 2013 to 2017. He was the President of the Senate (and thus first in line to the governorship) from 2015 to 2017. Cole also served in the West Virginia House of Delegates from May 28, 2010, to January 12, 2011, to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Delegate John Shott.
