West Toodyay
West Toodyay (previously known as Toodyay; colloquially known as Old Toodyay) was the original location of the town of Toodyay, Western Australia. It is situated in the Toodyay valley, north east of Perth. The Toodyay valley, discovered by Ensign Robert Dale in 1831, was opened up for settlement in 1836. The original site for the town of Toodyay was determined in 1836 and its boundaries were finalized 1838. The first survey of the town was carried out in 1849. After several serious floods, the decision was made to move the town of Toodyay to higher ground. In 1860, the new town of Newcastle was established further upstream. Newcastle was renamed in 1910 to Toodyay, and the original site became known as West Toodyay. Toodyay (, nys, Duidgee), known as Newcastle between 1860 and 1910, is a town on the Avon River in the Wheatbelt region of Western Australia, north-east of Perth. The first European settlement occurred in the area in 1836. After flooding in the 1850s, the townsite was moved to its current location in the 1860s. It is connected by railway and road to Perth. The Shire of Toodyay is a local government area in the Wheatbelt region of Western Australia, beyond the north-eastern limits of the Perth metropolitan area. The ''Spirit of the West'' was a restaurant train operated by South Spur Rail Services out of Perth, Western Australia from 2002 until 2008. History In 2001 the Midland Railway Company was formed by the South Spur Rail Services (SSRS), taking the name of the former Western Australian operator. On 18 October 2002 it commenced operating under the ''Spirit of the West'' brand with two services; the ''City to Port Indulgence'' and ''The Avon Experience''. The ''City to Port Indulgence'' operated on Friday and Saturday evenings as a dinner service from East Perth via the Eastern Railway to Woodbridge before proceeding south via the Kwinana line to Canning Vale and then north over the Fremantle line to Leighton. Old Newcastle School
The old Newcastle School is an historic building on Duke Street North in Toodyay, Western Australia. It was the first purpose built school in the new town site of Toodyay ( then known as Newcastle), and operated as a school from 1887 to 1954. Description The building was constructed in two stages. The original 1886 section is in Victorian Gothic style in red brick with a high pitched gable roof (originally shingle but now corrugated iron) and was designed by architect George Temple-Poole. The West Toodyay School, originally named the Toodyay School, was a government school in West Toodyay in Western Australia.
