West River (Rhode Island)
The West River is a river in the U.S. state of Rhode Island. It flows approximately U.S. Geological Survey. National Hydrography Dataset high-resolution flowline dataThe National Map accessed April 1, 2011 and is the only named tributary of the Moshassuck River. It has a history of providing water to textile mills during the Industrial Revolution as evidenced by the 7 dams along the river's length. Course The West River rises on the town line between Lincoln and Smithfield from a few small streams that originate in the vicinity of Lantern Road. The West River then flows southward, past Twin River Road and into Wenscott Reservoir. Below the reservoir, the river meanders east-southeast through North Providence and into Providence where it flows into the Moshassuck River north of downtown. Route 7 is a numbered state highway in Rhode Island, United States. It runs approximately from Route 246 in Providence to Joslin Road in Burrillville. Route description Route 7 begins in Providence at an intersection with Route 246, carrying Orms Street in a western direction. As it passes over I-95, the route meets Douglas Avenue and turns onto it, flanking a residential area. It then enters North Providence and continues for another , exiting the residential area at Wenscott Reservoir and entering Smithfield. On the reservoir, Route 7 crosses a causeway, becoming the Douglas Pike and retaining that name through the township. The road passes through a heavily wooded area, serving several homes in the area. Interstate 95 (I-95) is the main north–south Interstate Highway on the east coast of the United States, running generally southwest-northeast through the U.S. state of Rhode Island. It runs from the border with Connecticut near Westerly, through Warwick and Providence, and to the Massachusetts state line in Pawtucket. Providence is the capital and most populous city of the U.S. state of Rhode Island. Smithfield is a town that is located in Providence County, Rhode Island, United States. It includes the historic villages of Esmond, Georgiaville, Mountaindale, Hanton City, Stillwater and Greenville. The population was 22,118 at the 2020 census. Smithfield is the home of Bryant University, a private four year college. History The area comprising modern-day Smithfield was first settled in 1663 as a farming community by several British colonists, including John Steere.
