West Oahu CaneFires
The West Oahu CaneFires were a minor league baseball team in the Hawaii Winter Baseball league. They were based in Waipahu, Hawaii. The name CaneFires is derived from the burning of sugar cane before harvest on many plantations on the island of Oahu. They played their home games at Hans L'Orange Field. The CaneFires began as the Kauai Emeralds, but changed their name when they moved to Oahu in 1995. Hawaii Winter Baseball
Hawaii Winter Baseball (HWB), based in Honolulu, Hawaii, was a professional baseball league in the Hawaiian islands. It was loosely affiliated with Major League Baseball (MLB). History The HWB league first began play in 1993. Funded by Major League Baseball, the league drew players from the MLB, Nippon Professional Baseball, the Korea Baseball Organization, and independent leagues. Games were played in Hawaii from October to December. The HWB league first folded after the 1997 season as it was too heavily reliant on its limited funding from MLB. In 2006, the league returned for its sixth season. It was the only winter league to feature both top Japanese and American talent. However, this new league folded following the 2008 season when the contract with MLB expired. Hans L'Orange Field
Hans L'Orange Field is a stadium in Waipahu, Hawai'i. It is primarily used for baseball, and is the home field of Hawaii Pacific University's men's baseball team, Hawaii Pacific Sharks, the Sharks, since 2016. It was the home field of the Hawaii Winter Baseball teams North Shore Honu and West Oahu CaneFires before the league folded. It holds 2,200 people. History Hans L'Orange Field began as a recreation area for Oahu Sugar Co. workers. Originally known as Oahu Sugar Co. Field, it was later named after the manager who, in 1924, convinced the company to give up several acres of cane field, to create the recreation area. The park was refurbished for Hawaii Winter Baseball in 1995. Gabriel Stefan Kapler (born July 31, 1975), nicknamed "Kap", is an American former professional baseball outfielder, and current manager of the San Francisco Giants of Major League Baseball (MLB). Kapler was a 57th-round draft pick (1,487th overall) by the Detroit Tigers in the 1995 MLB draft. Kenley Geronimo Jansen (born September 30, 1987) is a Curaçaoan professional baseball pitcher for the Boston Red Sox of Major League Baseball (MLB). He has previously played in MLB for the Los Angeles Dodgers and Atlanta Braves. Signed by the Dodgers as an undrafted free agent in 2004, Jansen converted from a catcher to a relief pitcher in the minor leagues, and made his major league debut in 2010.
