'The West Dixie League was an American professional minor league baseball league that operated for two seasons from 1934 to 1935 as a Class C level league. History The West Dixie League was created when the Dixie League divided into the East Dixie League and West Dixie League in 1934. Nine cities were represented in the league; one was in Louisiana, and eight were in Texas. The Jacksonville Jax won both league titles. In 1936, the West Dixie League effectively became the East Texas League. Lufkin, TX
Lufkin is the largest city in Angelina County, Texas and the county seat. The city is situated in Deep East Texas and about 60 miles west of the Texas-Louisiana border. Its estimated population is 35,021 as of July 1, 2019. Lufkin was founded in 1884 and named for Abraham P. Lufkin. It originally served as a stop on the Houston, East and West Texas Railway. It was officially incorporated on October 15, 1890. Lufkin continued to serve as a stop on the railroad until 1890. Three businessmen founded Angelina Lumber Company, which led to much of the economic prosperity Lufkin later had. Wally Dashiell
John Wallace Dashiell (May 9, 1902 – May 20, 1972) was an American professional baseball shortstop. He played one game in Major League Baseball, for the 1924 Chicago White Sox. Dashiell's professional career spanned 1923 to 1938, plus a single game in 1941. He played over 1300 games in Minor League Baseball, initially in the farm system of the Philadelphia Athletics. On April 20, 1924, Dashiell appeared in his lone major-league game. With the Chicago White Sox hosting the Cleveland Indians, Dashiell entered the game in the third inning, replacing starting shortstop Hervey McClellan. In three plate appearances, Dashiell recorded a ground out, a pop out, and a sacrifice bunt. Defensively, he had one putout, one assist, and one error. The White Sox won the game, 5–4. Tyler Trojans
The Tyler Trojans were a minor league baseball team based in Tyler, Texas that played on-and-off from 1924 to 1950. The team played in the East Texas League (1924–1926, 1931, 1936–1940, 1946, 1949–1950), Lone Star League (1927–1929, 1947–1948) and West Dixie League (1935). The team was affiliated with the New York Giants in 1935 and 1936, the Cleveland Indians in 1939, the St. Louis Browns (1940) and Cincinnati Reds (1947–1949). The Tyler Governors were a minor league baseball team based in Tyler, Texas. In 1933 and 1934, the Governors played as members of the Class C level Dixie League and West Dixie League. The Governors hosted home games at the Trojan Park Athletic Field in 1933 and the East Texas Fair Association Fair Grounds in 1934. The Tyler Trojans preceded and succeeded the Governors in minor league play.
