West District () is a district in west Chiayi City, Taiwan. History The West District was established on 6 October 1990. District (Taiwan)
Districts are administrative subdivisions of the Taiwan, Republic of China (Taiwan)'s special municipality (Taiwan), special municipalities of the second level and provincial city (Taiwan), provincial cities of the third level formerly under its Provinces of China, provinces. There are two types of district in the administrative scheme. Ordinary districts are governed directly by the municipality/city government with district administrators appointed by the mayors to four-year terms. The mountain indigenous district is a local government body with elected district chiefs as well as district council serving four-year terms. Chiayi Art Museum
The Chiayi Art Museum () is an art museum in West District, Chiayi City, Taiwan. History The museum building was originally constructed in 1936 as a factory of the Chiayi branch of Taiwan Tobacco and Wine Monopoly Bureau during the Japanese rule of Taiwan. In November 2020, it was reopened as Chiayi Art Museum in an inaugurated ceremony by Mayor Huang Min-hui. On 27 January 2021, Eslite Bookstore opened a bookshop at the museum. The current director of the museum is Lai Yi-Hsin. Architecture The museum original factory building consisted of a main building and two warehouses. After it was turned into a museum, it consists of art spaces, library, shop, restaurant and garden. The museum was designed by M.H.Wang Architects and Associates and Studiobase Architects. Vincent Siew
Vincent C. Siew or Siew Wan-chang (; born 3 January 1939) is a Taiwanese politician who served as the Vice President of the Republic of China (Taiwan) from 2008 to 2012. He was the first Taiwanese-born Premier of the Republic of China and former vice-chairman of the Kuomintang (KMT). Early life Born in Chiayi City in the then Taiwan under Japanese control, Japanese colony of Taiwan on 3 January 1939, Siew graduated from Chiayi High School in 1957. In 1961, he graduated from the Department of Diplomacy at National Chengchi University (NCCU). After completing his conscription, he passed the Foreign Affairs Special Examination of 1962. He subsequently received his master's degree from the Graduate Institute of International Law and Diplomacy from NCCU in 1965. Chiayi Station
Chiayi () is a railway station in Chiayi, Taiwan served by Taiwan Railways and Alishan Forest Railway. History The station was firstly constructed in 1896 and opened on 20 April 1902 with service on the West Coast line. The station was a single-story wooden structure with Japanese style with slant roof and rain-shield walls. The rail line connected to the station roughly divides Chiayi City into two regions. The region located in front of the station prospered as the city business district, while the region located behind the station was scarcely developed. The Museum of Old Taiwan Tiles () is an art museum in West District, Chiayi City, Taiwan. History The museum building used to be a timber storage building during the Japanese rule of Taiwan. The museum founder James Hsu and his friends collected resources to purchase and renovate the building in 2015. In the same year, the museum building received subsidies for renovation from Chiayi City Government. Chiayi Cultural And Creative Industries Park
The Chiayi Cultural and Creative Industries Park () or G9 Creative Park is a multi-purpose park in West District, Chiayi City, Taiwan. History The area was originally opened in 1916 as Chiayi Brewery by the Japanese government. In 1922, the brewery company went public. In the 1970s, local people began referring the brewery as Chiayi Old Distillery (). It operated until 1999 when the Jiji earthquake destroyed the brewery chimney from 53 meters high to just 18 meters. Soon later it was then converted into the Chiayi Cultural and Creative Industries Park and was opened in 2003. On 11 January 2016, the park underwent three-year major renovation by the Ministry of Culture. Architecture The park consists of 21 buildings. The Art Site of Chiayi Railway Warehouse () is a historical warehouse in West District, Chiayi City, Taiwan. History In 1999, the Taiwan Provincial Government chose Chiayi City as the place for the Art Network of Railway Warehouse due to its position as the art and culture capital. In July 2000, the Council of Cultural Affairs chose five candidates and then decided to make the warehouse. The warehouse was converted from an idle railway warehouse. The planning work started in September 2000 by Chiayi City Government aiming to turn the warehouse into a center of art creation and exhibition. Architecture A total of 12 warehouses are lined up from north to south direction to form a block.
