Werner Neuhaus
Werner Neuhaus (1 November 1897, in Burgdorf, Switzerland, Burgdorf – 22 August 1934, in Lützelflüh) was a Swiss painter, printmaker and Drafter, draftsman. He was a founding member of the Swiss Expressionist :de:Gruppe Rot-Blau, Rot-Blau group. Biography After serving an apprenticeship in lithography at the Wassermann Institute in Basel and working for a short period, Neuhaus audited art classes at the :de:Allgemeine Gewerbeschule Basel, Gewerbeschule Basel. From 1921 to 1922, he studied and lived with Cuno Amiet in Oschwand. This likely influenced his decision to rent a studio in Binningen, Switzerland, Binningen in 1923, so he could pursue his art work undisturbed. While in Binningen he became friends with Albert Müller, Paul Camenisch and Hermann Scherer. In 1924, Neuhaus joined Müller, Camenisch, and Scherer in organizing the Rot-Blau group. Rüegsau Priory
Rüegsau Priory (possibly Rüegsau Abbey towards the end of its existence) (german: Kloster Rüegsau) was a 12th-century Swiss monastery of Benedictine nuns in Rüegsau, in the Canton of Bern. It was dissolved in 1528 as a result of the Reformation in Switzerland. History The origins of the community are unrecorded, but it is presumed to have been founded by Thüring of Lützelflüh, the founder of Trub Abbey, in the first half of the 12th century. A provost or prior is recorded for the first time in 1256. From the 13th century the names of the female heads of house, or ''Meisterinnen'', are recorded (with gaps). Between 1508 and 1516, an abbess (Margareta von Freiberg) is recorded. The nunnery was governed spiritually by the abbot of Trub. The priory acquired a number of scattered estates, which by around 1500 amounted to some hundred farms and other properties. Alexandre Calame
Alexandre Calame (28 May 1810 – 19 March 1864) was a Swiss landscape painter, associated with the Düsseldorf School. Biography He was born in Arabie at the time belonging to Corsier-sur-Vevey, today a part of Vevey. He was the son of a skillful marble worker in Vevey, but because his father lost the family fortune, Calame could not concentrate on art, but rather he was forced to work in a bank from the age of 15. When his father fell from a building and then died, it was up to the young Calame to provide for his mother. In his spare time he began to practice drawing small views of Switzerland. In 1829 he met his patron, the banker Diodati, who made it possible for him to study under landscape painter François Diday. After a few months he decided to devote himself fully to art. A still life (plural: still lifes) is a work of art depicting mostly inanimate subject matter, typically commonplace objects which are either natural (food, flowers, dead animals, plants, rocks, shells, etc.) or man-made (drinking glasses, books, vases, jewelry, coins, pipes, etc.). Emmental
The Emmental ( en, Emme Valley) is a valley in west-central Switzerland, forming part of the canton of Bern. It is a hilly landscape comprising the basins of the rivers Emme and Ilfis. The region is mostly devoted to farming, particularly dairy farming. The principal settlements are the town of Burgdorf and the village of Langnau. Comprising Burgdorf, Trachselwald, and Signau districts in the canton of Bern, the Emmental became part of the Emmental-Oberaargau administrative region on 1 January 2010. Rüegsau
Rüegsau is a municipality in the administrative district of Emmental in the Swiss canton of Bern. History Rüegsau is first mentioned in 1139 as ''Ruxow''. In 1229 it was mentioned as ''Ruchisowe''. The name comes from ''ruggere aue'', in modern German ''ruhe Aue'', meaning ''calm floodplain''. From the late 13th century until 1528 it was the location of Rüegsau Priory, a Benedictine nunnery. The oldest trace of a settlement is a neolithic artifact discovered in Rüegsau village. The first trace of a modern settlement is in the first half of the 12th century when Rüegsau Abbey was probably founded. While very little is known about the early history of the abbey, it was probably founded by Thüring von Lützelflüh around the same time that he founded Trub Abbey.
