Werner Haseleu
Werner Haseleu (2 May 1935 – 29 June 2012) was a German operatic bass-baritone and academic voice teacher. He was a long-term member of the Staatsoper Dresden and the Komische Oper Berlin, often with director Harry Kupfer at both houses. He was known for leading roles in world premieres and contemporary opera. Life and career Haseleu was born in Wittenberg and trained in Leipzig. He debuted in 1958 at the Nationaltheater Weimar, and worked there until 1973. He appeared there as Leporello in Mozart's '' Don Giovanni'', Don Alfonso in '' Così fan tutte'', King Philipp in Verdi's ''Don Carlos'', the title role of ''Falstaff'' and as Ochs in ''Der Rosenkavalier'' by Richard Strauss, among others. In 1973 he moved to the Staatsoper Dresden. On 21 April 1974, he took part in the world premiere of Rainer Kunad's ''Sabellicus'' at the Berlin State Opera. Wittenberg

The (), also known as the Berlin State Opera (german: Staatsoper Berlin), is a listed building on Unter den Linden boulevard in the historic center of Berlin, Germany. The opera house was built by order of Prussian king Frederick the Great from 1741 to 1743 according to plans by Georg Wenzeslaus von Knobelsdorff in the Palladian style. Deutscher Fernsehfunk (DFF; German for "German Television Broadcasting") was the state television broadcaster in the German Democratic Republic (GDR or East Germany) from 1952 to 1991. ''Die schweigsame Frau'' (''The Silent Woman''), Op. 80, is a 1935 comic opera in three acts by Richard Strauss with libretto by Stefan Zweig after Ben Jonson's '' Epicoene, or the Silent Woman''. Composition history Since '' Elektra'' and ''Der Rosenkavalier'', with only the exception of ''Intermezzo'', all previous operas by Strauss were based on libretti by Hugo von Hofmannsthal, who died in 1929. Stefan Zweig, who was then a celebrated author, had never met Strauss, who was his senior by 17 years. The Internationale Maifestspiele Wiesbaden (International May Festival, IMF) is a theater festival in Wiesbaden, Germany. He revised it as ''Il re cervo'', premiered in 1963 at the Staatstheater Kassel. ''The Stone Guest'' (''Каменный гость'' in Cyrillic script, Cyrillic, ''Kamennyj gost' '' in transliteration) is an opera in three acts by Alexander Dargomyzhsky from a libretto taken almost verbatim from Alexander Pushkin's 1830 The Stone Guest (play), play of the same name which had been written in blank verse and which forms part of his collection ''Little Tragedies''. It was first performed at the Mariinsky Theatre, Saint Petersburg, 16 February 1872 (Old Style and New Style dates, Old Style). According to the composer's wishes, the last few lines of tableau 1 were composed by César Cui, and the whole was orchestrated by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov. ''Judith'' is an opera in two acts by Siegfried Matthus with a libretto by the composer based on Friedrich Hebbel's '' Judith'' and texts from the Old Testament. The premiere was on 28 September 1985 at the Komische Oper Berlin, directed by Harry Kupfer. It was recorded in a studio production. History The composer Siegfried Matthus was pointed to Friedrich Hebbel's '' Judith'', a tragedy written in 1840, by stage director Harry Kupfer. Matthus wrote the libretto, also using some texts from the Old Testament, such as Psalm 115, Psalm 135, Psalm 72, Psalm 104 and verses from the Song of Songs. Hebbel's tragedy is based on the Book of Judith. ''Lear'' is an opera in two parts with music by the German composer Aribert Reimann, and a libretto by Claus H. Henneberg, based on Shakespeare's tragedy ''King Lear''. Background and performance history Reimann wrote the title role specifically for the baritone Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, who had suggested the subject to the composer as early as 1968.
