Werner Hermann Georg Braun (19 May 1926 – 24 August 2012) was a German musicologist. Life Born in Sangerhausen, Braun studied musicology at the Martin Luther University of Halle-Wittenberg from 1946 to 1950 with Max Schneider and school music with main instrument piano and Germanistics. In 1950 he passed the Staatsexamen for the teaching profession in the subjects music and German. From 1951 on he worked as and later as senior assistant at the musicological institute of the Martin-Luther-University in Halle. In 1952 he received his doctorate with a dissertation on Johann Mattheson. In 1958, the University of Halle-Wittenberg accepted his habilitation on the Central German Choral Passion in the 18th century. At the end of 1961, Braun left the German Democratic Republic with his wife and children and became a Privatdozent at the Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel, combined with a research position. Musicology (from Greek μουσική ''mousikē'' 'music' and -λογια ''-logia'', 'domain of study') is the scholarly analysis and research-based study of music. Musicology departments traditionally belong to the humanities, although some music research is scientific in focus (psychological, sociological, acoustical, neurological, computational). Some geographers and anthropologists have an interest in musicology so the social sciences also have an academic interest. A scholar who participates in musical research is a musicologist. Walter Wiora (30 December 1906 – 8 February 1997) was a German musicologist and music historian. Sethus Calvisius or Setho Calvisio, originally Seth Kalwitz (21 February 1556 – 24 November 1615), was a German music theorist, composer, chronologer, astronomer, and teacher of the late Renaissance. Biography He was born into a peasant family at Gorsleben in present-day Thuringia. By the exercise of his musical talents he earned money enough for the start, at Helmstedt, of a university career, which the aid of a wealthy patron enabled him to continue at Leipzig. Hermann Danuser (born 3 October 1946) is a Swiss-German musicologist. Life Born in Frauenfeld, Danuser studied piano, oboe, musicology, philosophy and German language and literature at the Musikhochschule and the University of Zurich from 1965; he received his doctorate with a dissertation on musical prose. From 1973 he studied in Berlin with Carl Dahlhaus (musicology) and Gerhard Puchelt (piano). After working as a research assistant, he habilitated in 1982 at the Technical University of Berlin with a thesis on ''the music of the 20th century'' (published in 1984). Carl Dahlhaus
Carl Dahlhaus (10 June 1928 – 13 March 1989) was a German musicologist who was among the leading postwar musicologists of the mid to late 20th-century. A prolific scholar, he had broad interests though his research focused on 19th- and 20th-century classical music, both areas in which he made significant advancements. However, he remains best known in the English-speaking world for his writings on Wagner. Dahlhaus wrote on many other composers, including Josquin, Gesualdo, Bach and Schoenberg. He spent the bulk of his career as head of the Berlin Institute of Technology's musicology department, which he raised to an international standard. Baroque music ( or ) refers to the period or dominant style of Western classical music composed from about 1600 to 1750. Renaissance music is traditionally understood to cover European music of the 15th and 16th centuries, later than the Renaissance era as it is understood in other disciplines.
