Chester Hamlin Werkman
Chester Hamlin Werkman (June 17, 1893, Fort Wayne, Indiana – September 10, 1962, Ames, Iowa) was an American microbiologist. He is known as one of the pioneers of understanding and reconstructing the enzymatic processes involved in bacterial metabolic processes. Biography After completing secondary school in Fort Wayne, he briefly worked for a railroad company. He then matriculated at Purdue University, where he graduated in 1919 with a B.S. in chemistry. In 1919, for a few months, he did routine research for the Food and Drug Administration in the Department of Agriculture. In September 1919 he became a chemistry instructor at the University of Idaho. In September 1920 he became a graduate student in the bacteriology department of Iowa State University. There in 1923 he received his doctorate with dissertation ''Immunologic Significance of Vitamins'' under the supervision of Robert Earle Buchanan. Hendrik Nicolaas Werkman
Hendrik Nicolaas Werkman (commonly called H. N. Werkman; 29 April 1882 – 10 April 1945) was an experimental Dutch artist, typographer, and printer. He set up a clandestine printing house during the Nazi occupation (1940–1945) and was shot by the Gestapo in the closing days of the war. Life and work Werkman was born on 29 April 1882 in Leens, in the province of Groningen. He was the son of a veterinary surgeon who died while he was young, after which his mother moved the family to the city of Groningen. In 1908, he established a printing and publishing house there that at its peak employed some twenty workers. Financial setbacks forced its closure in 1923, after which Werkman started anew with a small workshop in the attic of a warehouse. Werkman was a member of the artists' group ''De Ploeg'' ("The Plough"), for whom he printed posters, invitations and catalogues. Nicholas G. Werkman III is an American former basketball player for the Seton Hall Pirates of South Orange, New Jersey, who led the NCAA in scoring in 1962-63 and was in the top three nationally on his two other collegiate seasons. Born in Trenton, New Jersey, Werkman played for the basketball team that won 100 consecutive games for Immaculate Conception Grammar School. Werkman earned varsity letters in both baseball and basketball all four years he attended Trenton Catholic High School, where he graduated in 1960.
