Beatrice Were (born circa 1966) is a Ugandan AIDS activist. She discovered that she was HIV-positive in 1991, a month after her husband died of AIDS. Her work In 1993, Beatrice Were co-founded the non-governmental organization NACWOLA to unite Ugandan women living with HIV and to improve the quality of their lives. She has served as national coordinator of NACWOLA, and as the Executive Coordinator of the International Community of Women Living with HIV/AIDS, Uganda. She is currently National Coordinator for HIV/AIDS for ActionAid Uganda. Gideon Saulo Were (27 October 1934 – 7 July 1995) was a Kenyan professor of history, author, publisher, administrator and entrepreneur. He was born in Marama location of Kakamega, Kenya. His father, Saulo Omukofu, was an educationist and a prominent member of the North Nyanza District Appeal Court. Early life and education and early career Were was born on 27 October 1934. He attended Kakamega, and Maseno High Schools, from 1950 to 1956, before joining the Royal Technical College in Nairobi (now University of Nairobi) from 1957 to 1959 where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in History. He then proceeded to University of Wales, where he earned a PhD graduating summa cum laude in 1966. Edward Were
Edward Ash Were (14 November 1846–8 April 1915) was an Anglican suffragan bishop in the latter part of the 19th century and the first decades of the 20th. He was educated at Rugby School and New College, Oxford. After graduation, he was an Assistant Master at Winchester College for ten years before becoming Vicar of North Bradley in Wiltshire. After a spell as Chaplain to George Ridding, Bishop of Southwell he became the first, and long serving, Bishop of Derby (then a suffragan bishop in the Diocese of Southwell). In 1909 in a sideways move he was translated to the Diocese of Lichfield to be their suffragan Bishop of Stafford. Jonathan Binns Were (25 April 1809 – 6 September 1885) C.M.G., J.P. (Victoria) was an Australian politician, member of the Victorian Legislative Assembly and a stockbroker — the eponym of JBWere. Were was the third son of Nicholas Were, of Landcox, Somerset, by his wife Frances (née Binns) and was born at Wellington, in that county. Mellitus Mugabe Were (9 August 1968 – 29 January 2008) was a Kenyan politician affiliated to the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM). He was elected to the National Assembly of Kenya to represent Embakasi Constituency in the parliamentary election held on 27 December 2007. He was killed outside his house in the Nairobi suburb of Woodley, adjacent to the Kibera slum. Political career Were had been a voice for moderation in Kenya's escalating political crisis, shuttling between leaders of different ethnic groups and organising a youth peace march just before he died. Paul Were Ooko (; born 8 October 1993) is a Kenyan professional footballer who plays as a winger for Greek Football League club Egaleo and the Kenya national team. Robert Were Fox FRS (26 April 1789 – 25 July 1877) was a British geologist, natural philosopher and inventor. He is known mainly for his work on the temperature of the earth and his construction of a compass to measure magnetic dip at sea. Life and family Fox was born on 26 April 1789 at Falmouth, England, the eldest son of Robert Were Fox (1754–1818) and his wife, Elizabeth Tregelles. He had nine siblings. The Fox family were members of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers), and were descended from members who had long settled in Cornwall, although they were not related to George Fox who had introduced the community into the county. In 1814, Fox the Younger married Maria Barclay (1785–1858), daughter of Robert and Rachel Barclay of Bury Hill, near Dorking, Surrey.
