Wendy Stewart
Wendy Stewart (née Thomas; born c. 1952) is a former Ottawa City Councillor and Ottawa-Carleton Regional Councillor. While on council, she was described as being a fiscal conservative. Stewart was born in Ottawa, and attended South Carleton High School while living in Hazeldean, Ontario, now a suburb of Ottawa. While a student at South Carleton, she was crowned "Miss Ottawa Rough Rider" in 1970, as well as "Miss Sweetheart" at her school. During her term as Miss Ottawa Rough Rider, she endorsed Howard Henry's candidacy for the Ontario Liberal Party nomination in the 1971 provincial election in Ottawa West. A month later, Stewart finished third in the "Miss Eastern Ontario" competition. Stewart later became a commercial artist, and married Rough Riders professional football player Ron Stewart on Valentine's Day in 1975 in Barbados. Carleton Heights
Carleton Heights (French: ''Hauteurs Carleton'') is a neighbourhood in River Ward in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. According to the Carleton Heights and Area Community Association, the neighbourhood is bounded on the north by the Central Experimental Farm, on the east by the Rideau River, on the south by the junction of Prince of Wales Drive and Fisher Avenue and on the west by Fisher Avenue. The neighbourhood is sometimes referred to as Hog's Back after the nearby falls. The total population of the neighbourhood is 7,586 according to the Canada 2016 Census. Homes were developed after World War II in the main Carleton Heights neighbourhood (then part of Nepean Township), located south of Meadowlands Drive. Most of these homes were not built until c. 1950. The neighbourhood was originally built for War Veterans, thanks to the Veterans' Land Act. Westport, Ontario
Westport is a village in Eastern Ontario, Canada. It lies at the west end of Upper Rideau Lake, at the head of the navigable Rideau Canal system, southwest of Ottawa. The village of Westport was incorporated as an independent municipality in 1904. Surrounded by the Township of Rideau Lakes, within Leeds County, Westport is Ontario's smallest municipality (by land area). History The first settlers to the Westport area arrived in the period between 1810 and 1820. The land on which Westport now sits was originally granted by the Crown to a Mr. Hunter, but he never settled in the area and it was eventually purchased by Reuben Sherwood in 1817. The 2000 Ottawa municipal election was a municipal election that was held on November 13, 2000, in Ottawa. The elections were held for mayor of Ottawa, Ottawa City Council and a number of school trustees. These elections would mark the first for the newly amalgamated city, which added 10 former municipalities to Ottawa. At the time of the city elections, the amalgamation had not occurred yet; the official date of that happened on January 1, 2001. Mayoral race The race for mayor only had two major candidates, that of the Chair of the Regional Municipality of Ottawa-Carleton, Bob Chiarelli and the mayor of the City of Gloucester, Claudette Cain. The Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO) is a non-profit organization representing municipal and regional governments in the Canadian province of Ontario. It was created on June 22, 1972 through a merger of the Ontario Municipal Association and the Ontario Association of Mayors and Reeves.
