Wenchi
Wenchi is a town and is the capital of Wenchi Municipal of the Bono Region in middle-belt of Ghana. Wenchi is located at 7.73333 atitude in decimal degrees -2.1 ongitude in decimal degreesat an average elevation/altitude of 304 meters. Wenchi is approximately 30 km north of Techiman and about 50 km east of the Ivory Coast border. Wenchi has a population of 39,187 people in 2013. Transport Wenchi is connected by road to Techiman and Sunyani and its airport, Sunyani Airport. Wenchi is not serviced by a railway station on the Ghana Railway Corporation, but it has been proposed that a line be extended to Wenchi. It has less vehicular traffic as few people own cars and motors. Culture Wenchi celebrates the annual Apoo, a yam festival in April/May. Wenchi Municipal District
Wenchi Municipal District is one of the twelve districts in Bono Region, Ghana. Originally created as an ordinary district assembly in 1988 when it was known as Wenchi District, until the western part of the district was split off to create Tain District on 12 November 2003 (effectively 17 February 2004); thus the remaining part has been retained as Wenchi District. It was later elevated to municipal district assembly status and has been renamed as Wenchi Municipal District on 29 February 2008. The municipality is located in the northeast part of Bono Region and has Wenchi as its capital town. Unity Sporting Club
Wenchi Sporting Club formerly known as Unity Sporting Club is Ghanaian football club based in Wenchi, Brong-Ahafo. They are competing in the Brong Ahafo Division Two Zone 9. In July 2013 the club executives vote to change the name to Wenchi Sporting Club, a move which was aim at getting the people to Wenchi to have a sense of belonging to the club. The club was founded in 2007 by the club's president Mr. Ernest Anokye-Gyan with support from Unity Community & Sport Association and Unity Football Club, of Reading in Berkshire, England to promote safe ground for young athletes to develop their football skill. The club also operate a sports academy which currently has 150 youngsters between ages of 10 – 21 years, focusing on the education and development of young athletes. Kofi Abrefa Busia
Kofi Abrefa Busia (born 11 July 1913 – 28 August 1978) was a Ghanaian political leader and academic who was Prime Minister of Ghana from 1969 to 1972. As a nationalist leader and prime minister, he helped to restore civilian government to the country following military rule. Early life and education Busia was born a Bono prince in the traditional kingdom of Wenchi, in the Brong Ahafo Region, one of the four Gold Coast Territories, then under British rule and now called Ghana. He was educated at Methodist School, Wenchi, Mfantsipim School, Cape Coast, then at Wesley College, Kumasi, from 1931 to 1932. He taught at Wesley College and left to study at Achimota College in 1935 and taught there. He gained his first degree with Honours in Medieval and Modern History from the University of London, through correspondence during this period. Bono Region
The Bono region is one of the 16 administrative regions of Ghana. It is as a result of the remainder of Brong-Ahafo region when Bono East region and Ahafo region were created. Sunyani, also known as the green city of Ghana, is the regional capital. Sunyani can pride itself as the cleanest capital city and a major conference destination. Techiman is a city and is the capital of Techiman Municipal and Bono East Region of Ghana. Techiman is a leading market town in South Ghana. Omanhene
In several Akan nations of Ghana, the Omanhene (''Pl. Amanhene)'' is the title of the supreme traditional ruler ('king') in a region or a larger town. The omanhene is the central figure and institution of the nation. Officially, he has no function in the current Ghanaian political setup, but, has enormous influence on the people that constitute it. Today 'Hene' can be found in titles of other rulers in Ghanaian nations. For example, the chief of the Dagomba in the north of Ghana is known as the 'Dagombahene'. The Akan omanhene and collectively the ''Ahemfo'' are major land owners, and are the heads of an essentially feudal system. They commit the land they theoretically hold in trust to caretakers. Apoo Festival
The Apoo Festival is a festival celebrated annually in western Ghana (specifically the towns of Techiman and Wenchi), lasting a week in March and April. The festival is meant to ritually purify the people of social evils, as well as uniting people and families, and includes a variety of other traditional cultural activities. The word 'apoo' comes from the root word 'po', meaning 'to reject.' The festival is heavily associated with the Bono people. Not only is it held in Techiman, one of the most important cities to the Bono people and kingdom, insults, proverbs, maxims, songs, and historical recountings of the Bono Kingdom are exchanged during the titular Apoo procession; many of these insults, proverbs, and songs are directed towards the Ashanti, who conquered the Bono Empire. Town
