Welwyn RFC
Welwyn Rugby Football Club (Commonly abbreviated as Welwyn RFC) is an English rugby union club playing in London 2 North West following their promotion from London 3 North West as runners up at the end of the 2017–18 season. History The club was formed in 1931 as Welwyn (East), after a number of Welsh from the valleys and Scots from the border woollen mills arrived in town to work in the local hosiery factory or in factories such as Murphy Radio, where they formed a rugby club and played on various pitches on the east side of town. The first president was a retired Irish army officer, Major C. D. Ross. Welwyn (East) was the second rugby club in Welwyn Garden City, after Mid Herts, which was formed in the mid-1920s and composed mainly of players from the west side of town. Hertfordshire Rugby Football Union
The Hertfordshire Rugby Football Union is the governing body for the sport of rugby union in the county of Hertfordshire in England. The union is the constituent body of the Rugby Football Union (RFU) for Hertfordshire, and administers and organises rugby union clubs and competitions in the county. It also administers the Hertfordshire county rugby representative teams. History Although the Hertfordshire Rugby Football Union was formed in 1935 and there have been club sides based in the county since as the late 19th century, a senior representative side did not take part in the County Championships until as late as 1952. Steve Bates
Steve Bates (born 4 March 1963) is a rugby coach and retired from former rugby union player. He played at scrum-half for London Wasps and was capped once for the England national rugby union team. He twice worked as a coach at Newcastle Falcons, 1995–2003 and 2007–2010. Early life Steven Michael Bates was born on 4 March 1963 in Merthyr Tydfil, Wales. During his days as a player, in the amateur era, Bates was a schoolteacher at Radley College and Lord Wandsworth College in Hampshire. Rugby career He played at scrum-half for London Wasps, where he formed a successful partnership with fly-half Rob Andrew. He was capped once for England, against in Bucharest in 1989, and was on England's tour of South Africa in 1994. Thomas Jankowski
Thomas Jankowski (born 17 February 1989) is a Polish international rugby union player, playing for Las Vegas Blackjacks RUFC and the Poland national rugby union team. Career Jankowski, who was eligible for the Polish national team due to the nationality of his grandfather, grew up in Hertfordshire, England, where at age 10 began to play rugby. He represented Hertfordshire at all age levels, and at age 18 was made captain of Hertfordshire under 20s, he also took up senior 1st team rugby early aged just 17. In 2008 he moved to Bedfordshire to be educated at the University of Bedfordshire, receiving a BSc in Sport and Physical Education, receiving a full athletic scholarship during his time there. Joe Worsley
Joseph Paul Richard Worsley, (born 14 June 1977) is a retired English rugby union player who played flanker for Wasps and England. Biography Worsley was born in London and educated at Hitchin Boys' School and Brunel University. He joined London Wasps at the age of 16 from Welwyn RFC. He went on to help Wasps win the Anglo-Welsh Cup in 1999 and 2000. He became the youngest player to represent England U21s, after being a member of the England Schools 18 Group Grand Slam team in 1994–95. Amongst his trophies at Wasps were four Premiership titles in 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2008. Worsley played in all four finals, scoring a try in 2003. He also played in the victorious 2004 and 2007 Heineken Cup finals. Worsley is noted for his defensive capabilities against opposing ball-carriers. Wasps Rugby Football Club is a professional rugby union team. They last played in Premiership Rugby, the top division of English rugby until being suspended on 12 October 2022. On 17 October 2022 the club entered administration, resulting in relegation to the RFU Championship, and all staff being made redundant. They exited administration on 16 December 2022. Founded in 1867 as Wasps FC, Wasps Football Club, from 1923 to 1996 they were based at Repton Avenue in Sudbury, London. The England national rugby union team represents England in men's international rugby union. They compete in the annual Six Nations Championship with France, Ireland, Italy, Scotland and Wales. Welwyn Garden City ( ) is a town in Hertfordshire, England, north of London. It was the second garden city in England (founded 1920) and one of the first new towns (designated 1948). John Wackett
John Arthur Sibley Wackett (27 September 1930 – 24 February 2024) was an English international rugby union player. Born in Hatfield, Hertfordshire, Wackett was educated at Welwyn Garden City Grammar and played his early career for Welwyn RFC, before moving on to London club Rosslyn Park. Wackett made 37 appearances for Hertfordshire and gained two England caps as a hooker in the 1959 Five Nations Championship, against Wales in Cardiff and Ireland in Dublin. Hertfordshire Presidents' Tankard
The Hertfordshire Presidents' Tankard is an annual rugby union knock-out club competition organized by the Hertfordshire Rugby Football Union. It was first introduced during the 2010-11 season, with the inaugural winners being St Albans. It is the second most important rugby union cup competition in Hertfordshire, behind the Hertfordshire Presidents' Cup but ahead of the Hertfordshire Presidents' Trophy. The Presidents' Tankard is currently open to the first teams of club sides based in Hertfordshire that play in tier 7 (London 2 North West) and tier 8 (London 3 North West) of the English rugby union league system.
