Welgris Highlanders F.C.
Welgris Highlanders, formerly known as Welgris Momads, was a semi-professional Papua New Guinean soccer club based in Mount Hagen, but playing their home games in Goroka. They were one of five founding members of the Papua New Guinea National Soccer League, but reached the knockout stages just once in four years of competing. After a three-year hiatus, the side played their final NSL season in 2012–13, where they finished bottom of the league. History Foundation and early years The club was founded as Welgris Momads sometime at the start of the 21st century, as their first season on record came in 2001 when they took part in the Mount Hagen Regional League. Among seven participants they were the eventual champions. Blue Kumuls Mount Hagen
Blue Kumuls is a semi-professional association football club based in Mount Hagen, Papua New Guinea. The club was founded sometime before 1980's. The club has taken part in three editions of the Papua New Guinea National Club Championship with their best finish coming in 2005 when they finished fourth. They also finished as runners-up in the Highlands Regional League on two occasions. The club is currently under the leadership of Elias Wapsiat and is taking part in the 2019 edition of the Papua New Guinea National Soccer League, and are through to the playoffs after having finished second in the Highlands Conference. University Inter, founded as ANZ University and formerly known also as ICF University, and, simply, University, is the oldest known semi-professional club association football club in Papua New Guinea, founded in 1969. It is the football club on the campus of the University of Papua New Guinea, based in Port Moresby. The club's finest hour came when they were given the opportunity to represent Papua New Guinea at the 2007–08 OFC Champions League, after they won the 2006 Papua New Guinea National Club Championship and defeated Hekari United in a continental playoff. PNG Football Stadium (known as ''Lloyd Robson Oval'' until 2015) is a sporting ground in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea. It hosted three games for the 1989–1992 Rugby League World Cup. It has been the home ground for the Papua New Guinea national rugby league team since 1975. It has a total capacity of approximately 15,000 and is the National Stadium of Papua New Guinea. The stadium was completely redeveloped in preparation for the 2015 Pacific Games. The 2008–09 Papua New Guinea National Soccer League season, known as the Telikom NSL Cup for sponsorship reasons, was the third edition of Papua New Guinea National Soccer League. The title was won by Hekari Souths United, who won their third consecutive title. The side were awarded the title after several postponements and the eventual cancellation of the Grand Final, by virtue of their superior regular season finish compared to Rapatona Tigers, who they were due to face in the final. Teams Eight teams entered the competition, an expansion of one from the previous season's seven. Previous season's runners-up Gelle Hills, and bottom two clubs Madang Fox and Besta Madang Fighters, all withdrew. The 2007–08 Papua New Guinea National Soccer League season, known as the Telikom NSL Cup for sponsorship purposes, was the second edition of the Papua New Guinea National Soccer League. The title was won by PRK Hekari United, who picked up their second title. Hekari United, formerly known as POM Souths, Souths United, PRK Souths United and Hekari Souths United, is a professional football club formed in 2006, based in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea. The club holds the record for most titles in the Papua New Guinea National Soccer League, having won eight consecutive titles from 2006 to 2014. They are also one of the two clubs from outside Australia and New Zealand to have won the OFC Champions League, and therefore to have represented Oceania at the FIFA Club World Cup, having achieved both in 2010. The 2006 Papua New Guinea National Soccer League season was the first edition of the Papua New Guinea National Soccer League, and the first ever semi-professional football competition held in the country. Papua New Guinea National Club Championship
The Papua New Guinea National Club Championship is the top amateur division of association football in Papua New Guinea. It is a nationwide league and was probably founded in 1976. The league was the highest level of football administered by the Papua New Guinea Football Association (PNGFA) until the introduction of the semi-professional National Soccer League in 2006. Thereafter, there were two seasons which ran alongside the semi-professional league, in 2006 and 2008, before the league became defunct after the 2008 edition. Goroka
Goroka is the capital of the Eastern Highlands Province of Papua New Guinea. It is a town of approximately 19,000 people (2000), above sea level.
