Carl Theodor Georg Philipp Welcker (* 29 March 1790, in Oberofleiden – 10 March 1869, in Neuenheim bei Heidelberg) was a German legal scholar, law professor, politician, and journalist. Biography Education and early career He studied at the universities of Giessen and Heidelberg and qualified as a lecturer in 1813 at Giessen. A work on the philosophy of law that he published that year brought about his appointment as extraordinary professor. But after a short time, in 1814, he left his '' alma mater'' to follow a call from Kiel, where along with his academic duties he edited the ''Kieler Blätter'', which appeared for the first time in the middle of 1815. Called in 1817 to Heidelberg, he stayed there only until 1819, when he followed a call to Bonn. Here his work was hindered because of an 1817 petition to the diet (german: Landesversammlung) he had signed which had asked for a provincial constitution. Gertrude Welcker (16 July 1896 – 1 August 1988) was a German stage and silent film actress. She appeared in 64 films between 1917 and 1925. Biography Gertrude Welcker was born in Dresden on 16 July 1896. Her father, who was editor-in-chief and general manager of the Posener Tageblatt, died in 1909. She had a younger brother named Herbert (born 1898). Welcker visited Max Reinhardt's acting school in Berlin during the First World War. From 1915 to 1916 she starred in productions at the Albert Theater in Dresden. From 1916 to 1919 she performed at the Deutsches Theater, Kammerspiele, and Volksbühne. Carola Giedion-Welcker
Carola Giedion-Welcker (née Welcker; April 25, 1893, Cologne – February 21, 1979, Zurich) was a German-Swiss art historian. Life and work Carola Welcker was born in Cologne in 1893, the daughter of a banker Carl Welcker (1848–1928) and his American wife Mary Legien (1865–1919). She studied art history in Munich under Heinrich Wölfflin, and in Bonn with Paul Clemen. She received her doctorate in Bonn in 1922. During her studies in Munich she met Sigfried Giedion, a Swiss fellow-student, and they married in 1919. In 1923 the couple met László Moholy-Nagy, who introduced them to Hans Arp a year later. Arp interested her in the literature of Lautréamont, Rimbaud, and Jarry, and persuaded her to attend the 1925 Surrealists exhibition in Paris. Friedrich Gottlieb Welcker
Friedrich Gottlieb Welcker (4 November 1784 – 17 December 1868) was a German classical philologist and archaeologist. Biography Welcker was born at Grünberg, Hesse-Darmstadt. Having studied classical philology at the University of Giessen, in 1803 he was appointed master in the high school, an office which he combined with that of lecturer at the university. In 1806 he journeyed to Italy, and was for more than a year private tutor at Rome in the family of Wilhelm von Humboldt, who became his friend and correspondent. Welcker returned to Giessen in 1808, and resuming his school-teaching and university lectures was in the following year appointed the first professor of Greek literature and archaeology at that or any German university. After serving as a volunteer in the campaign of 1814 he went to Copenhagen to edit the posthumous papers of the Danish archaeologist Georg Zoega (1755–1809), and published his biography, ''Zoegas Leben'' (Stuttgart, 1819). Hermann Welcker
Hermann Welcker (8 April 1822 – 12 September 1897) was a German anatomist and anthropologist who was born in Giessen. He was a nephew to philologist Friedrich Gottlieb Welcker (1784–1868). In 1851 he earned his doctorate from the University of Giessen, and in 1859 he became a professor and prosector at the University of Halle. In 1876 he succeeded Alfred Wilhelm Volkmann (1801–1877) as director of the anatomical institute at Halle. Along with his anatomical duties, Welcker was also a specialist in the fields of anthropology, ethnology, microscopy and biology. He published numerous articles on each of these subjects. In 1854 he devised a method for measuring blood volume in humans and animals. He also devised a method for measuring red blood cell volume. The eponymous "Welcker's angle" is named after him, which is the anterior, inferior angle of the parietal bone. Garbuna Group
The Garbuna Group of volcanoes consists of three volcanic peaks, Krummel, Garbuna, and Welcker, atop a shield volcano. They are located at the southern end of the Willaumez Peninsula, just to the west of the town of Kimbe, in West New Britain, Papua New Guinea. Garbuna contains a large thermal field, probably Papua New Guinea's largest. Until recently, it was assumed that the Garbuna volcano was probably dormant, or perhaps extinct. The last eruption was believed to have occurred around 1300 AD, or 700 years ago. Evidence from past eruptions indicates large amounts of tephra and lava were produced. However, on 17 October 2005 the Garbuna volcano erupted without warning. Ash was reported 4,000 m above the summit.
