Weil Am Rhein
Weil am Rhein (High Alemannic: ''Wiil am Rhii'') is a German town and commune. It is on the east bank of the River Rhine, and extends to the point at which the Swiss, French and German borders meet. It is the most southwesterly town in Germany and a suburb of the Swiss city Basel. Weil am Rhein is part of the "trinationale Agglomeration Basel" with about 830,000 inhabitants. Geography Weil am Rhein is located at in the district of Lörrach in the Federal State of Baden-Württemberg. The city limits border France to the west and Switzerland to the south including the triple border of the three countries. Locally, Weil is situated in the region referred to as Markgräflerland. The city's location on the Rhine and proximity to the Black Forest give it a continental climate, particularly suited to viticulture. Weil der Stadt is a town of about 19,000 inhabitants in the Stuttgart Region of the German state of Baden-Württemberg. It is about west of Stuttgart city centre, in the valley of the River Würm, and is often called the "Gate to the Black Forest". Name The name Weil derives from the Latin word ''villa'', an estate or manor. The suffix ''die Stadt'' (the town) was added to distinguish Weil from various nearby villages of the same name, such as Weil im Dorf and Weil im Schönbuch. The modern name is unusual in that it contains the dative article ''der'' rather than the nominative article ''die''. This quirk arose because place names typically come after prepositions that govern the dative case in German, such as ''in'' or ''aus''. Weil im Schönbuch is a municipality in the Böblingen district, middle Neckar region, Stuttgart governmental district, Baden-Württemberg, Germany. Its unusual name (''weil'' means "because" in German) is derived from the presence of a Roman villa in the area. Two smaller villages, Neuweiler and Breitenstein, are incorporated into Weil im Schönbuch. Portions of the Schönbuch Natural Park belong to Weil im Schönbuch; the forested park has many scenic paths, ponds, streams and protected areas for animals and rare plants. Geography Weil im Schönbuch is located 12 km south of Böblingen in a clearing of the Schönbuch forest on the northern edge of the Schönbuch Nature Park. Highway B464, which links Böblingen and Tübingen, runs through the western edge of the town. The oldest parts of the town are located on an east-west ridge.
