Weekend (Welsh Band)
Weekend were a Welsh band formed by Alison Statton in 1981, following the split of Young Marble Giants. The band was a merger between two projects. Statton began writing with Spike of Z Block Records and Reptile Ranch in Cardiff, Wales in the summer of 1981, before moving to London where she teamed up with Simon Emmerson (at that time using the name Simon Booth) of Methodishca Tune. The band signed to Rough Trade Records in December 1981, but recorded only one studio album, ''La Variete''. ''La Variete'' was released in 1982 on the Rough Trade label and made it to no. 4 in the UK Indie Chart staying there for 15 weeks. It was revered by critics on release as a bold new departure from the prevailing post-punk ethos, and served as a major influence on Saint Etienne, the Sundays, Belle and Sebastian and many others. Alison Statton
Alison Statton (born March 1958) is a Welsh singer best known for her work with Young Marble Giants. Fans of the singer have included Kurt Cobain, Courtney Love, Stephin Merritt, Belle and Sebastian and Renato Russo. A mini-LP or mini-album is a short vinyl record album or LP, usually retailing at a lower price than an album that would be considered full-length. Working Week (band)
Working Week were a British jazz-dance band active in the 1980s and 1990s. Working Week was formed in 1983 by guitarist Simon Booth and saxophonist Larry Stabbins from the band Weekend, which ended when singer Alison Statton left to become a schoolteacher. The duo released their debut single "Venceremos (We Will Win)" during the following year. The song was a tribute to Chilean protest singer Víctor Jara, with vocals by Robert Wyatt and Tracey Thorn (the latter from the band Everything but the Girl). It became the band's highest placing in the UK Singles Chart, where it peaked at No. 64. The single included founding members of the London School of Samba, notably Bosco de Oliveira and Dawson Miller. Other early members of the group also performed with the band. Belle and Sebastian are a Scottish indie pop band formed in Glasgow in 1996. Led by Stuart Murdoch, the band has released eleven albums. They are often compared with acts such as The Smiths and Nick Drake. The name "Belle and Sebastian" comes from '' Belle et Sébastien'', a 1965 children's book by French writer Cécile Aubry later adapted for television. The Sundays
The Sundays were an English alternative rock band, formed in the late 1980s, which released three albums throughout the 1990s. The band's beginnings came with the meeting of singer Harriet Wheeler and guitarist David Gavurin while attending Bristol University. Wheeler had played gigs with Cruel Shoes, an early incarnation of the band Jim Jiminee. The duo soon augmented the band with bassist Paul Brindley and drummer Patrick Hannan. The Sundays secured a recording contract with Rough Trade Records. Their debut single was "Can't Be Sure". Their first album, ''Reading, Writing and Arithmetic'', was released in 1990, along with their next single "Here's Where the Story Ends", and became a UK top 5 hit. Saint Etienne are an English band from London, formed in 1990. The band consists of Sarah Cracknell, Bob Stanley (musician), Bob Stanley and Pete Wiggs. Rough Trade Records
Rough Trade Records is an independent record label based in London, England. It was formed in 1976 by Geoff Travis who had opened a record store off Ladbroke Grove. Having successfully promoted and sold records by punk rock and early post-punk and indie pop bands such as the Normal and Desperate Bicycles, Travis began to manage acts and distribute bands such as Scritti Politti and began the label, which was informed by left-wing politics and structured as a co-operative. Soon after, Rough Trade also set up a distribution arm that serviced independent retail outlets across Britain, a network that became known as the Cartel. In 1983, Rough Trade signed the Smiths. Young Marble Giants
Young Marble Giants were a Welsh post-punk band formed in Cardiff, Wales, in 1978. Their music was based around the vocals of Alison Statton along with the minimalist instrumentation of brothers Philip and Stuart Moxham. Their early sound was a sharp contrast with the more aggressive punk rock that dominated the underground at the time. Young Marble Giants released just one studio album, ''Colossal Youth'', in 1980. They also released two EPs and recorded a John Peel session. Simon Emmerson
Simon Emmerson (born 12 February 1956) is an English record producer, guitarist, DJ, musical director at Lush, and founder of the group Afro Celt Sound System. He is also the main organiser of The Imagined Village, a collaborative work from many roots artists. Emmerson also plays on this album. In 1995 Emmerson was nominated for a Grammy for his production work on Baaba Maal's album ''Firin' in Fouta''. Earlier in his career, under the pseudonym Simon Booth, he was a member of the bands Working Week and Weekend, played guitar on Everything but the Girl's debut album '' Eden'' and produced records for Baaba Maal and Manu Dibango.
