Wedderburn, Victoria
Wedderburn is a rural town in Victoria, Australia on the Calder Highway, north of Victoria's capital city, Melbourne. At the , Wedderburn had a population of 680. It is mainly a farming community but its early residents were gold miners and prospectors. History The post office opened on 1 August 1856, after the first gold rush to the area commenced in 1852, but it was known as Korong until 1858. The Kulwin railway line, railway arrived in 1883, linking Wedderburn with Charlton, Victoria, Charlton and Bendigo, Victoria, Bendigo via Inglewood, Victoria, Inglewood. In the ''Bendigo Advertiser'' of 14 May 1884 it was written: "That well-known locality, Korong Vale, has been re-christened. It has been so determined in consequence of the confusion of names, there being a Korong (now Wedderburn), a Kerang, a Mount Korong, and the Korong Vale. Electoral District Of Ripon
Ripon is a single member electoral district of the Victorian Legislative Assembly. It is a rural electorate based in western Victoria. In 1946 the electoral district of Ripon was first contested but then abolished in the 1955 election after being held by Labor for seven of these years. Ripon was re-created in 1976, essentially as a replacement for Hampden and Kara Kara. Ripon has an area of 16,761 square kilometres. Victoria Cross
The Victoria Cross (VC) is the highest and most prestigious award of the British honours system. It is awarded for valour "in the presence of the enemy" to members of the British Armed Forces and may be awarded posthumously. It was previously awarded by countries of the Commonwealth of Nations, most of which have established their own honours systems and no longer recommend British honours. It may be awarded to a person of any military rank in any service and to civilians under military command. No civilian has received the award since 1879. Albert Jacka
Albert Jacka, (10 January 1893 – 17 January 1932) was an List of Australian Victoria Cross recipients, Australian recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest decoration for gallantry "in the face of the enemy" that can be awarded to members of the British and Commonwealth of Nations, Commonwealth armed forces. Jacka was the first Australian to be decorated with the VC during the First World War, receiving the medal for his actions during the Gallipoli Campaign. He later served on the Western Front (World War I), Western Front and was twice more decorated for his bravery. After the war, Jacka returned to Australia and entered business, establishing the electrical goods importing and exporting business ''Roxburgh, Jacka & Co. Pty Ltd''. Melbourne Cup
The Melbourne Cup is a Thoroughbred horse race held in Melbourne, Australia. It is a 3200-metre race for three-year-olds and over, conducted by the Victoria Racing Club on the Flemington Racecourse in Melbourne, Victoria as part of the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival. It is the richest "two-mile" handicap in the world and one of the richest turf races. The redback spider (''Latrodectus hasselti''), also known as the Australian black widow, is a species of highly venomous spider believed to originate in South Australia or adjacent Western Australian deserts, but now found throughout Australia, Southeast Asia and New Zealand, with colonies elsewhere outside Australia.
