Web-series
A web series (also known as a web show) is a series of scripted or non-scripted online videos, generally in episodic form, released on the Internet, which first emerged in the late 1990s and became more prominent in the early 2000s. A single instance of a web series program can be called an episode or a "webisode", however the term is not always used. In general, web series can be watched on a range of platforms and devices, including desktop, laptop, tablets and smartphones. They are different from streaming television, which can be watched on various streaming platforms. As of 2016, there were a number of awards that have been established to celebrate excellence in web series, like the Streamys, Webbys, IAWTV, and Indie Series Awards, although the Streamys and IAWTV also cover programs on streaming platforms. Indie Series Awards
The Indie Series Awards (formerly the Indie Soap Awards) is an annual event hosted by ''We Love Soaps'', based in Los Angeles, California, honoring the best in independently produced, scripted entertainment created for the Internet. The ceremony was founded by Roger Newcomb in 2010. In 2013, after the 4th Indie Soap Awards ceremony, the awards were rebranded as the Indie Series Awards. The awards ceremony was named as one of the 12 "must attend" web series events for creators and fans of online content by Raindance. History The award-giving body was established in 2009 by ''We Love Soaps'' a Manhattan-based media company boutique that champions serialized entertainment in all forms. The Spot
The Spot, or thespot.com, was the first episodic online story (1995–1997), and covered bandwidth and production costs by offering paid advertising banners on the web pages and product placement within the journal entries. The site earned one of the original Webby Awards. Overview ''The Spot'' was likened to "'' Melrose Place''-on-the-Web" and featured a rotating cast of actors playing trendy and hip twenty somethings who rented rooms in a fabled southern California beach house called “The Spot”, in Santa Monica, California. Some of the actors depicted online were also writers and behind-the-scenes production staffers on the site, while some later appeared in independent films or in broadcast television series as on-screen performers. Vancouver Web Series Festival
The Vancouver Web Series Festival, also known as the Vancouver Web Fest, is a web series festival based in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. It is known as the first ever Canadian festival dedicated solely to entertainment and programming created exclusively for the Internet. In 2017, IndieWire called the festival "one of the leading destinations for quality web content". Raindance dubbed it one of the "must attend" web series events for creators and fans of online content. ''The Province'' described the festival as "the future of broadcast." Background The festival was founded in 2013 by Canadian film and television producer, writer and entrepreneur Suzette Laqua, and had its inaugural event May 2 through May 4, 2014. The Los Angeles Web Series Festival, more commonly known as the LA Web Fest, is a web series festival based in Los Angeles, California. It was founded in 2009 by Michael Okwudili Ajakwe Jr and was one of the first web series-based events; ''Filmmaker Magazine'' called it "the granddaddy of all webfests." The event has attracted controversy for its policies. Background The festival had its first official event in 2010. The IAWTV Awards is an annual event hosted by the International Academy of Web Television, currently based in Los Angeles, that honors web series creators and talent in more than two dozen categories. History The IAWTV Awards are hosted annually (with some exceptions) by the International Academy of Web Television (IAWTV), which was founded in 2008 and is devoted to the advancement of the arts and sciences of web television production. Inception In 2010, before the IAWTV Awards existed, the IAWTV hosted the 2nd annual Streamy Awards. Episode
An episode is a narrative unit within a larger dramatic work or documentary production, such as a series intended for radio, television or streaming consumption. The noun ''episode'' is derived from the Greek term ''epeisodion'' (), meaning the material contained between two songs or odes in a Greek tragedy. It is abbreviated as '' ep'' (''plural'' eps).
