''Weaver v National Association of Teachers in Further and Higher Education'' 988ICR 599 EAT is a UK labour law case, concerning racial discrimination. Facts The National Association of Teachers in Further and Higher Education refused to give advice or assistance to a woman lecturer who wanted to bring a claim for racial harassment against a fellow worker at Bournville College of Further Education because the worker could lose his job. It was then the policy of the Union not to support a case against a Union member if that member's job could be put at risk. Judgment The Employment Tribunal upheld the trade union’s decision not to assist, on the grounds that the Union's policy was justifiable, even if the case involved allegations of race discrimination. The Employment Appeal Tribunal dismissed the appeal against that decision. National Association Of Teachers In Further And Higher Education
The National Association of Teachers in Further and Higher Education (NATFHE) was the British trade union and professional association for people working with those above statutory school age, and primarily concerned with providing education, training or research. In the higher education sector it was mainly concentrated in the Post 16 sector. In 2004 NATFHE celebrated 100 years since the London-based Association of Teachers in Technical Institutions (ATTI) was formed. ATTI grew and became NATFHE on 1 January 1976 following amalgamation with the Association of Teachers in Colleges and Departments of Education (ATCDE). As of 2005 it had 67,000 members. On 2 December 2005 the results of a membership ballot on a merger of AUT and NATFHE were announced. The merger was supported by 79.2% of AUT and 95.7% of NATFHE members who voted. Bournville College is a further education college based in Longbridge, Birmingham, England. The college offers courses that include A Levels, BTECs, NVQs, apprenticeships, and bespoke qualifications. History The college was established in 1913 by George Cadbury to cater for education for the local population that included the workforce of the nearby Cadbury chocolate and confectionery factory, and was named Bournville College from 1949. In 1972, the college was relocated to Bristol Road (), into premises that had been part of City of Birmingham Polytechnic. David Maxim Triesman, Baron Triesman (born 30 October 1943) is a British politician, merchant banker and former trade union leader. Triesman is a Labour member of the House of Lords.
