WBLX-FM (92.9 MHz, "93BLX") is an American urban contemporary music-formatted radio station that serves Mobile, Lower Alabama, and Pensacola, Florida. The station has served the Gulf Coast for more than 25 years. Owned by Cumulus Media, its studios are on Dauphin Avenue in Midtown Mobile, and its transmitter is near Robertsdale, Alabama. The station was assigned the WBLX-FM call letters by the Federal Communications Commission on July 4, 1988. In 2006, WBLX began broadcasting in IBOC digital radio, using the HD Radio system from iBiquity. History WBLX began in October 1973 as FM counterpart to gospel station WMOO (1550 AM). The station is owned by Cumulus Media and the broadcast license is held by Cumulus Licensing LLC. The radio studios and offices are on Dauphin Street in Midtown Mobile. By day, WXQW broadcasts at 10,000 watts non-directional, covering parts of Alabama, Mississippi and the Florida Panhandle. WGOK (900 AM), "Gospel 900") is a radio station serving the Mobile, Alabama, area with a Gospel music format. The station is under ownership of Cumulus Media. Its studios are on Dauphin Avenue in Midtown Mobile, and its transmitter is northwest of downtown. History The radio station in the early 1960s was located at 900 Gum Street right in the middle of a swamp. The station was part of the largest chain of black radio stations in the country called The OK Group. All of the stations in the OK Group had an OK at the end of their call letters. Urban Adult Contemporary
Urban adult contemporary, often abbreviated as urban AC or UAC, (also known as adult R&B,) is the name for a format of radio music, similar to an urban contemporary format. Radio stations using this format usually would not have hip hop music on their playlists, and generally include some mix of contemporary R&B and traditional R&B (while urban oldies stations emphasize only the latter). HD Radio (HDR) is a trademark for an in-band on-channel (IBOC) digital radio broadcast technology. It generally simulcasts an existing analog radio station in digital format with less noise and with additional text information. HD Radio is used primarily by AM and FM radio stations in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, with a few implementations outside North America.
