Wayne Wood
Wayne Wood (June 5, 1951 – November 10, 2019) was a Canadian ice hockey goaltender. He played 104 games in the World Hockey Association with the Vancouver Blazers, Toronto Toros, Calgary Cowboys, and Birmingham Bulls. He played between the pipes as a goaltender with the Montreal Junior Canadiens during a time when they won two Memorial Cups. Shortly after, Wood was drafted by the New York Rangers and then went on to enjoy an 11-year career in the WHA and AHL. During his time in the AHL, he won the Calder Cup Championship (1981) with the Adirondack Red Wings where he was MVP of the playoffs. Vancouver Blazers
The Vancouver Blazers were a professional ice hockey team that played in the World Hockey Association from 1973 to 1975. The Blazers played at the Pacific Coliseum in Vancouver, sharing the facility with the Vancouver Canucks of the National Hockey League. The Blazers were owned by local businessman Jim Pattison. The franchise moved to Vancouver after a single season in Philadelphia. Unable to establish a strong fan base in Vancouver, the team was moved again in 1975 to become the Calgary Cowboys. The Omaha Knights was the name of three minor league professional ice hockey teams from 1959 to 1965 and from 1966 to 1975, based in Omaha, Nebraska, at the Ak-Sar-Ben Arena. The Knights were founded in 1959 as members of the International Hockey League. Following the 1962-63 season the team moved to Toledo, Ohio, becoming the Toledo Blades. The Cincinnati Stingers were an ice hockey team based in Cincinnati that played in the World Hockey Association from 1975 to 1979 and in the Central Hockey League during the 1979–80 season. Their home arena was Riverfront Coliseum. They are the only major league hockey team to have played in Cincinnati. History The Stingers franchise was awarded in 1974 as part of the WHA's ill-conceived attempt at expansion. They entered the league for the 1975–76 WHA season along with the Denver Spurs. Most of the league's existing teams were not financially stable, and franchise relocations were commonplace. The Stingers achieved enough stability that they were the only one of the WHA's five expansion teams that lasted through to the end of the league, but they were left out of the NHL–WHA merger in mid-1979.
