Wayne Broeren
Wayne Henry Broeren (2 March 1933 – 26 March 1991) from Champaign, Illinois, was a United States Paralympic athlete. In the 1960 Summer Paralympics, he competed in multiple sports including dartchery and wheelchair basketball. In the 1960, he was a member of the winning United States wheelchair basketball team and one half of the pair that won the mixed dartchery, along with Jack Whitman. Jack Whitman
Jack Whitman (died September 30, 2004) was an American paralympic archer and dartcher. He competed at the 1960 and 1964 Summer Paralympics, Biography Whitman was raised on a farm in Galesburg, Illinois. He attended Galesburg High School, where he played football and track athletics, graduating in 1948. After graduating, Whitman attended the University of Illinois in 1949, where he became paralyzed in an accident while competing in the gymnastics team. He returned to the University of Illinois in 1952. He took up archery after a neighbor provided him with a bow and arrow in 1960. Whitman participated at the 1960 Summer Paralympics, with participating in the first archery competition at the Paralympic Games. He was awarded the gold medal in the men's FITA round open event. Wheelchair basketball is basketball played by people with varying physical disabilities that disqualify them from playing a non-disabled sport. These include spina bifida, birth defects, cerebral palsy, paralysis due to accident, amputations (of the legs, or other parts), and many other disabilities. The International Wheelchair Basketball Federation (IWBF) is the governing body for this sport. It is recognized by the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) as the sole competent authority in wheelchair basketball worldwide. FIBA has recognized IWBF under Article 53 of its General Statutes. The IWBF has 95 National Organizations for Wheelchair Basketball (NOWBs) participating in wheelchair basketball throughout the world, with this number increasing each year.
