Wayne Benson
John Wayne Benson is an American mandolinist and songwriter in the bluegrass tradition. He is best known for his unique approach to the mandolin, and his long-term involvement with Russell Moore and IIIrd Tyme Out. History Early years Benson was raised in Charlotte, North Carolina, in a musical family where his father John Benson played fiddle, banjo, and guitar with his uncles. Gifted a Roy Rogers guitar for Christmas when he was seven, Benson learned how to play, sitting in on family music gatherings. At age 15, he began playing mandolin. In his late teens, Benson was part of the bluegrass music scene in Denton, North Carolina. Livewire In 1989, Scott Vestal invited Benson to join the band Livewire with Ernie Sykes (bass) and Robert Hale (guitar). International Bluegrass Music Association
The International Bluegrass Music Association, or IBMA, is a trade association to promote bluegrass music. Formed in 1985, IBMA established its first headquarters in Owensboro, Kentucky. In 1988 they announced plans to create the International Bluegrass Music Museum as a joint venture with RiverPark Center in Owensboro. In 1987 IBMA established the World of Bluegrass, a combination trade show, concert, and awards presentation. This was originally set in Owensboro, before moving to Louisville, Kentucky in 1997. Nashville, Tennessee hosted this event from 2005 through 2012. Since 2013, the event has been hosted in Raleigh, North Carolina. In 1991 IBMA established the International Bluegrass Music Hall of Honor at the International Bluegrass Music Museum to recognize lifetime contributions to bluegrass, both by performers and non-performers. Donna Hughes (musician)
Donna Hughes is an Americana country bluegrass singer, songwriter, guitarist, pianist, and animal rights activist. She has released several albums on Rounder Records and one of her songs has been recorded by Alison Krauss. Her second album, ''Gaining Wisdom'' (2007), was produced by bluegrass guitar legend Tony Rice and third album (2010) by the legendary banjo performer J.D. Crowe. In August 2014, Donna Hughes produced and released two albums on her own label Running Dog Records: ''From The Heart'', where she wrote 19 of the 21 tracks and a piano album. Lonesome Day Records is an independent record label founded by Randall Deaton based in Booneville, Kentucky that supports bluegrass and country bands. History Founder Randall Deaton started the Lonesome Day label in 2002, and released their first recordings in 2004. He named the label after the Bruce Springsteen song "Lonesome Day." In 2013, Jeff Carter, a musician and co-founder of Via Media, purchased a minority shareholder stake in Lonesome Day, providing marketing experience and short term financing as required. Larry Cordle (born November 16, 1948) is an American country and bluegrass singer-songwriter . Cordle is most famous for his song "Murder on Music Row", which was recorded by George Strait and Alan Jackson and received the Country Music Association Award for Vocal Event of the Year, and CMA nomination for Song of the Year, in 2000. Jim Hurst
Jim Hurst is an American bluegrass and country guitarist. He is known primarily as an instrumentalist but has also been credited for vocals with numerous other artists as well as his solo career. Hurst has performed with musicians that include Holly Dunn, Trisha Yearwood, Sara Evans, and Missy Raines. He has also won numerous awards for his work. Randy Kohrs
Randy Kohrs is an American multi-instrumentalist best known for his resonator guitar prowess, but he plays 13 instruments. He is also a Grammy-winning producer and recording engineer. Biography Early years Kohrs was raised on a farm near the rural town of New Virginia, Iowa. He learned acoustic guitar from his uncle at age 8, quickly followed by resonator guitar. In his teens, Kohrs played with the Missouri bluegrass band Possum Trot. He played with them for 10 years, while also fronting a local country band. Chris Jones is an American Bluegrass music, bluegrass singer, guitarist, songwriter, and broadcaster, singing in a baritone voice. He fronts the Night Drivers. Biography Jones started out in Brooklyn, New York, where his mother was a singer and actress. His uncle played Scruggs-style and clawhammer banjo. Rural Rhythm Records is a record label based in Nashville, Tennessee specializing in recordings by bluegrass music and gospel music artists. History "Uncle" Jim O'Neal founded the Rural Rhythm label in 1955 in Arcadia, California. He sold via mail order, records were often produced with a generic white front sleeve with a stamped serial number in the upper right corner. O'Neal insisted records would sell for $3.50 apiece (as opposed to major label records that sold for $3.98 to $4.98). O'Neal also released 20 songs on each LP album, as opposed to major labels who released on average 12 songs on each LP. O'Neal died in 1982, and Sam Passamano purchased Rural Rhythm in 1987.
