Wayne Albee
Wayne Clinton Albee (1882–1937) was an American pictorialist photographer, best known for his portraits of dancers such as ballerina Anna Pavlova, Adoplh Bolm of the Ballets Russes, and early modern dance pioneers Doris Humphrey, Ted Shawn, and Ruth St. Denis. Albee got his start at age sixteen, working in a photographic supply shop owned by Byron Harmon. He went on to work for McBride Studios with business partner Ella E. McBride. She soon become a well-known photographer in her own right, and credited Albee's influence with inspiring her to learn to take her own photographs. He also was an early mentor to the Japanese American photographers Frank Kunishige and Soichi Sunami, who assisted him at McBride Studios. He was an informal advisor to the Seattle Camera Club, and he also served for many years as the chief judge at the Frederick & Nelson art salons. Frank Kunishige
Asakichi “Frank” Kunishige (1878-1960) was a Japanese-American Pictorialist photographer. He was a founding member of the Seattle Camera Club. He created and sold his own photographic paper, Textura Tissue, which was a favorite of club members because it emphasized the soft qualities that Pictorial photographers prized. Along with Wayne Albee and Soichi Sunami, he worked for Ella E. McBride at the McBride studio. During the 1920s, Kunishige’s work was included in many prominent international exhibitions including those of the Royal Photographic Society, London; the Pittsburgh Salon; the Buffalo Salon; the Paris Salon; and numerous others. From 1925 through 1929, he was one of the most exhibited Pictorialist photographers in the world. Frederick & Nelson
Frederick & Nelson was a department store chain in the northwestern United States, based in Seattle, Washington. Founded in 1891 as a furniture store, it later expanded to sell other types of merchandise. The company was acquired by Marshall Field & Company in 1929. By 1980, the Frederick & Nelson chain had expanded to 10 stores in two states (Washington and Oregon). The company went out of business in 1992. Its former Seattle flagship store building is now occupied by the flagship Nordstrom store. History Frederick & Nelson was the successor to a business founded by two partners, Donald E. Frederick and James Mecham, who had been mining colleagues back in Colorado. Seattle Camera Club
The Seattle Camera Club (SCC) was an organization of photographers active in Seattle, Washington, during the 1920s. It was founded in 1924 by Japanese immigrants and thrived for the next five years. The SCC was the only Japanese American photography club to include both Caucasians and women photographers as members, and because of their inclusivity their members were among the most exhibited photographers in the world at that time. History The 39 charter members of the club were all Japanese men. Unlike other prominent clubs of Japanese photographers, they decided at the beginning to welcome women and Caucasian members. Soichi Sunami
Soichi Sunami (角南 壮一, given name translating as "magnificent first son," and family name translating as "south corner"; 1885–1971) was a modernist photographer, influenced by the pictorialist movement, and best known for his portraits of early modern dancers, including Ruth St Denis, Agnes De Mille, Helen Tamiris and Martha Graham, with whom he maintained an extended artistic collaboration. He produced some of the only known images of the early black modern dancer, Edna Guy, and also photographed the modern dancer Harald Kreutzberg.
