Wave (Antônio Carlos Jobim Album)
''Wave'' is the fifth studio album by Brazilian jazz musician Antônio Carlos Jobim, released in 1967 on A&M Records. Recorded in the US with mostly American musicians, it peaked at number 114 on the ''Billboard'' 200 chart, as well as number 5 on the Jazz Albums chart. ''Wave'' was arranged and conducted by Claus Ogerman, and features jazz musicians including trombonists Urbie Green and Jimmy Cleveland, flautist Jerome Richardson, and bassist Ron Carter, as well as a string section. Photographer Pete Turner created the solarized cover photo of a giraffe. Reception In a 2014 review, Richard S. Ginell of AllMusic praised the album for "Wave" and "Triste" (deeming them two "instant standards") and its "absolutely first-rate tunes... that escaped overexposure and thus sound fresh today." He concluded, "one only wishes that this album were longer; 31:45 is not enough." Antônio Carlos Jobim
Antônio Carlos Brasileiro de Almeida Jobim (25 January 1927 – 8 December 1994), also known as Tom Jobim (), was a Brazilian composer, pianist, guitarist, songwriter, arranger, and singer. Considered as one of the great exponents of Brazilian music, Jobim merged samba with cool jazz in the 1960s to create bossa nova, with worldwide success. As a result, he is regarded as one of the fathers of bossa nova, and as one of the most-celebrated songwriters of the 20th century. Jobim was a primary force behind the creation of the bossa nova style, and his songs have been performed by many singers and instrumentalists internationally since the early 1960s. Pete Turner (photographer)
Donald Peter Turner (May 30, 1934 – September 18, 2017) was an American photographer. In 1986, Turner published his first monograph, ''Pete Turner Photographs'' ( Abrams). His second book, ''Pete Turner African Journey'' ( Graphis Inc., 2001), documents Turner's many adventures in Africa, beginning with his trek in 1959 from Cape Town to Cairo with Wally Byam's famous Airstream caravan. ''The Color of Jazz'' ( Rizzoli, 2006) is a comprehensive collection of his provocative album covers for CTI Records among many others. Life and work Critic A. D. Gene Orloff
Gene Orloff (June 14, 1921 – March 23, 2009) was an American violinist, concertmaster, arranger, contractor and session musician. Background The son of a Russian immigrant violin maker, Orloff would try and get his father's violin down from the piano and try to play it. He was only three at the time. By the time he was five, he was playing recitals in his home city of Boston. Later, he was playing concerts at venues which included performances at Carnegie Hall and with the Boston Symphony. Having won a scholarship at the Curtis Institute of Music, he left due to the schedule and found work as a commercial musician and, on occasion, was working 15 hours per day. During his time, the artists that Orloff performed with included Meat Loaf, The Bee Gees, Aretha Franklin, Frank Sinatra and Barbra Streisand. Harry Lookofsky
Harry William Lookofsky (1 October 1913 – 8 June 1998) was an American jazz violinist. He was also the father of keyboardist-songwriter Michael Brown, who most notably was a founding member of the Left Banke and Stories. Early life and family Harry Lookofsky was born in Paducah, Kentucky, in 1913, the son of Ben Lookofsky and Lottie Dinkin, Jewish emigrants from the Russian Empire. He studied classical violin in St. Louis. Career Lookofsky joined the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra in the mid-1930s. An early admirer of Joe Venuti, Lookofsky eventually became recognized as one of the earliest accomplished bebop jazz violinists. Claudio Slon
Claudio Slon (November 12, 1943 - April 16, 2002) was a notable Brazilian jazz drummer born in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He performed in a variety of Latin music genres, including Latin pop, Latin jazz, Brazilian pop and easy pop. The son of a classical violinist and a ballet instructor, Slon was raised in São Paulo and began recording professionally at an early age, taking first place in a national poll of jazz critics while still a teenager. He performed alongside his father in the São Paulo Philharmonic, before appearing with the Walter Wanderley Trio, as well as Sérgio Mendes' Brasil '66 and Brasil '77 during the 1960s and 1970s. Bobby Rosengarden
Robert Marshall Rosengarden (April 23, 1924 – February 27, 2007) was an American jazz drummer, percussionist and bandleader. A native of Elgin, Illinois, United States, he played on many recordings and in television orchestras and talk show bands. Rosengarden began playing drums when he was 12, and later studied at the University of Michigan. After playing drums in Army bands in World War II, he moved to New York City, working in several groups between 1945 and 1948, before becoming a busy studio musician. He played at NBC-TV (1949–1968) and ABC (1969–1974) on ''The Steve Allen Show'', ''The Ernie Kovacs Show'', ''Sing Along With Mitch'', Johnny Carson's The Tonight Show Band, and led the band for ''The Dick Cavett Show''. Dom Um Romão (3 August 1925 – 27 July 2005) was a Brazilian jazz drummer and percussionist. Noted for his expressive stylings with the fusion band Weather Report, Romão also recorded with artists such as Cannonball Adderley, Paul Simon, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Jorge Ben, Sergio Mendes and Brasil '66, and Tony Bennett. "Wave" (also known as "Vou Te Contar" in Portuguese; "I am going to tell you") is a bossa nova and jazz standard song written by Antônio Carlos Jobim. Recorded as an instrumental on his 1967 album of the same name, its English lyrics were written by Jobim himself later that year. But the version of Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66 is the first release of the tune, sung by Lani Hall with Mendes on their second album, ''Equinox'', in 1967. The English lyrics were used on the February 11, 1969, recording by Frank Sinatra, on his 1970 album '' Sinatra & Company''. They were also used by Johnny Mathis in his 1970 '' Close to You'' album.
