Waterside railway station served the village of Waterside, East Ayrshire, Scotland, from 1856 to 1964 on the Ayr and Dalmellington Railway. History The station was opened on 7 August 1856 by the Glasgow and South Western Railway The Glasgow and South Western Railway (G&SWR) was a railway company in Scotland. It served a triangular area of south-west Scotland between Glasgow, Stranraer and Carlisle. It was formed on 28 October 1850 by the merger of two earlier railway .... To the south was the goods yard and at the south end of the platform was the signal box, which opened in 1893. To the north was a siding which served Dalmellington Iron Works to the northwest. It closed in 1921 but the private railway continued to keep the site in operation. The station closed on 6 April 1964. Waterside is a village in East Ayrshire, Scotland, situated about five miles north of Galston on the Craufurdland Water in the Parish of Fenwick. It lies a few miles north of Moscow on the A719 and had a population of 141 in the Census of 2001. History The mill Previously known as Hareshaw Mill this old carding mill dates from 1784 and has gone through a number of uses,Close, Page 126 even hosting a bookshop at one point. The 1856 OS map records the location of the weir, sluice, and lade that diverted and carried water to the mill wheel from the Craufurdland Water. By 1910 the OS maps show that the wollen mill was no longer in use as a mill. Part of the mill became a private dwelling. Although built as a carding mill, Waterside Mill was later also used for weaving. The wheelpit of the mill still survives. The Glasgow and South Western Railway (G&SWR) was a railway company in Scotland. It served a triangular area of south-west Scotland between Glasgow, Stranraer and Carlisle. It was formed on 28 October 1850 by the merger of two earlier railways, the Glasgow, Paisley, Kilmarnock and Ayr Railway and the Glasgow, Dumfries and Carlisle Railway. Already established in Ayrshire, it consolidated its position there and extended southwards, eventually reaching Stranraer. Its main business was mineral traffic, especially coal, and passengers, but its more southerly territory was very thinly populated and local traffic, passenger and goods, was limited, while operationally parts of its network were difficult. Ayr And Dalmellington Railway
The Ayr and Dalmellington Railway was a railway company in Scotland, which connected the growing ironworks community around Dalmellington with Ayr, in Ayrshire, Scotland. Its route was originally planned by the ''Ayrshire and Galloway Railway'' as part of a scheme to link Ayr with Castle Douglas, but lack of funds limited the construction to a very short section connecting the iron and coal pits of the Dalmellington Iron Company with its iron works, opening in 1849. The remainder of the line opened in 1856. It was the first railway to cross the river at Ayr. At that time the main line from Glasgow terminated at a station north of the river.
