Watershed Mine
The Watershed mine is a large open pit mine located about 160 km northwest of Cairns on Cape York Peninsula in Far North Queensland, Australia. Watershed represents one of the largest tungsten reserves in Australia having estimated reserves of 15.1 million tonnes of ore grading 0.46% tungsten. The mine is owned by Vital Metals who acquired the project in 2005. Watershed was Vital Metals flagship project. At time of its acquisition, the site had yet to complete is pre-feasibility study. Development of the site has proceeded with the assistance of the Japan Oil, Gas and Metals National Corporation. In September 2013, the mine was eventually granted permission to proceed from the Queensland Department of Environment and Heritage Protection. Mount Carbine is a rural town and locality in the Shire of Mareeba, Queensland, Australia. In the , the locality of Mount Carbine had a population of 101 people. Geography The locality is bounded to the east by the ridge of the Great Dividing Range. The Mitchell River enters the locality from the west (Hurricane) where it forms part of the western boundary of the locality, before flowing east and forming part of the southern boundary. Scheelite
Scheelite is a calcium tungstate mineral with the chemical formula Ca W O4. It is an important ore of tungsten (wolfram). Scheelite is originally named after Swedish chemist K. Scheele (1742-1786). Well-formed crystals are sought by collectors and are occasionally fashioned into gemstones when suitably free of flaws. Scheelite has been synthesized using the Czochralski process; the material produced may be used to imitate diamond, as a scintillator, or as a solid-state lasing medium. Peninsula Developmental Road
The Peninsula Developmental Road (PDR) runs from Lakeland to Weipa. It is the main road transport link within Cape York Peninsula and to the rest of the Australian mainland. The segment from Weipa Town to south of the town is within the Rio Tinto mine lease. The within the Rio Tinto mine lease boundary is not part of the Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads controlled road. The department excluded this section from its official PDR calculations. The segment from Lakeland to the Rio Tinto boundary is and is under Transport and Main Roads control. Road conditions of from Lakeland to Weipa is currently unsealed road (as of April 2022). The condition of the unsealed road is highly variable.
