Waterloo Public Library
The Waterloo Public Library (abbreviated as WPL) is the public library system for Waterloo, Ontario, Canada. Founded in 1888, the library has four branches, as of May 2022. Services The three branches offer print and digital resources, programs for all ages. The John M. Harper Branch has bookable study rooms and non-commercial groups. This branch and the Main Library both have rooms for rent for commercial groups. The Main Branch has a VHS tape converter. History The Waterloo Mechanics' Institute purchased their first books in 1876 and stored them on a table in Town Hall. This was the forerunner of the Waterloo Public Library. They had a $2.00 annual subscription fee to use these materials. The funds were used to purchase more books and eventually shelves. In 1888, the Mechanics' Institute transferred their assets to the brand new Waterloo Free Library. By 1902, the Waterloo Free Library contained 7,013 works. Waterloo, Ontario
Waterloo is a city in the Canadian province of Ontario. It is one of three cities in the Regional Municipality of Waterloo (formerly Waterloo County, Ontario, Waterloo County). Waterloo is situated about west-southwest of Toronto. Due to the close proximity of the city of Kitchener, Ontario, Kitchener to Waterloo, the two together are often referred to as "Kitchener–Waterloo", "K-W" or "The Twin Cities". Andrew Carnegie
Andrew Carnegie (, ; November 25, 1835August 11, 1919) was a Scottish-American industrialist and philanthropist. Carnegie led the expansion of the American steel industry in the late 19th century and became one of the richest Americans in history. He became a leading philanthropist in the United States, Great Britain, and the British Empire. During the last 18 years of his life, he gave away around $350 million (roughly $ billion in ), almost 90 percent of his fortune, to charities, foundations and universities. His 1889 article proclaiming " The Gospel of Wealth" called on the rich to use their wealth to improve society, expressed support for progressive taxation and an estate tax, and stimulated a wave of philanthropy. List Of Carnegie Libraries In Canada
There are a total of 125 public Carnegie libraries in Canada. Of these, the vast majority (111) were built in Ontario. They were constructed and opened from 1903 to 1922. Place names as they were during the grant period are used. In a few cases, Carnegie made multiple donations. An attempt is made to note these and sum the total amount. Walper Hotel
The Walper Hotel (formerly Walper House and also known as the Walper Terrace Hotel) is a hotel in Kitchener, Ontario, Canada. The current hotel building was constructed in 1893 for $75,000 after a previous establishment, known as John Roat's Commercial Hotel, burned down in 1892. On 14 March 1983, it received heritage designation by the City of Kitchener under Part IV (Municipal Heritage Designation) of the ''Ontario Heritage Act''. In September 2013, the hotel was bought by the Zehr Group, the Perimeter Development Corporation, David Struke and CK Atlantis Ltd. for $4.6 million. The Hotel was renovated in 2016 and reopened in May and June for weddings and in July for guests. The renovation cost $3.5 million. RIM Park
RIM Park is a 500-acre (2 km²) city park facility offering both outdoor and indoor amenities on the northeast side of the city of Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, near the Eastbridge neighbourhood. Key facilities and features include the Manulife Financial Sportsplex and Healthy Living Centre, the heritage Elam Martin farmstead, The Benchwarmer sports bar, and the Grey Silo Golf Course. The eastern edge of the park borders on the Grand River for 1.5 km, and the park grounds have about 7 km (4 miles) of asphalt trail loops. In the planning stages, the multi-amenity park had been called Millennium Recreation Park, however the name RIM Park was chosen to acknowledge the large contributions from its primary donor, the employees of Research In Motion (RIM) (doing business as BlackBerry Limited since January 2013), who contributed $2 million in 2001.
