Waterford Greenway
The Waterford Greenway, also known locally as the Déise Greenway, is a route on a former railway track in County Waterford, Ireland, used for cycling and hiking. It opened in March 2017, on what was originally the Mallow/Waterford railway line, and forms part of EuroVelo 1 route. The Waterford Greenway features 11 bridges, three viaducts and a 400-metre tunnel and runs between the city of Waterford, Mount Congreve, Kilmeaden, Kilmacthomas, and Dungarvan, and passes along part of the Copper Coast. At 46 km, it is Ireland's longest greenway. The Waterford and Suir Valley Railway shares the route along the banks of River Suir. In December 2017, it was announced that over 250,000 had used the new route since it opened in March. Kilmacthomas
Kilmacthomas or Kilmactomas (), often referred to locally as "Kilmac", is a town on the River Mahon in County Waterford, Ireland. It lies on the R677, a road north of the N25 national primary road from Dungarvan to Waterford. History During the Cromwellian conquest of Ireland, in December 1649, Oliver Cromwell marched from Waterford to Kilmacthomas during the Siege of Waterford. The weather was wet and stormy and the river was in flood, so the army couldn't cross. Two nights were spent in the field that is now the public park. Cromwell was said to have described Waterford county on his march from Waterford to Kilmacthomas in the winter of 1649 as being a craggy and desolate place. After returning to Ireland after several years in Newfoundland, 18th-century Irish-language poet Donnchadh Ruadh Mac Conmara converted to Protestantism and joined the Church of Ireland parish at Rossmire, Newtown near Kilmacthomas. ''EuroVelo'' is a network of currently 17 long-distance cycling routes criss-crossing Europe, in various stages of completion. When completed, the EuroVelo network's total length will almost be . more than were in place. EuroVelo is a project of the European Cyclists' Federation (ECF). Cork Greenway
County Cork has a number of rail-trails and greenways and, as of 2022, there are plans and proposals at various stages of preparation to create a network of walking trails for the county. The term "Cork Greenway" has been used in press coverage, but is not yet used officially. Midleton — Youghal rail trail In July 2015, Irish Rail indicated they had no intention of re-opening the Midleton to Youghal section of the Cork and Youghal Railway as funds would be better spent on the existing network. They indicated support for a greenway, as it would free them from existing maintenance costs whilst retaining a license to re-open the route in the event that became an option. By April 2020, a €15 million euro project to open the Midleton to Youghal Greenway had begun but was being delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic. The proposed trail would measure 23 kilometres. Ballyduff, County Waterford
__NOTOC__ Ballyduff () is a village in County Waterford, Ireland. It is also a parish in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Waterford and Lismore. Historical maps mark the location of Ballyduff Castle in ruins. It was built in 1627 by the carpenter Andrew Tucker for the Earl of Cork. The Drew family gained possession of it later in the 17th century. Location and access Ballyduff is approximately west of Lismore, County Waterford and east of Fermoy, County Cork. The village is located on the River Blackwater, which is spanned by the late 19th century Ballyduff Bridge. The former Ballyduff railway station (opened in 1872 and closed in 1967) was located on the Waterford to Mallow line. It was served by the Rosslare to Cork boat train. Mallow, County Cork
Mallow (; ) is a town in County Cork, Ireland, approximately thirty-five kilometres north of Cork. Mallow is in the barony of Fermoy. It is the administrative centre of north County Cork, and the Northern Divisional Offices of Cork County Council are located in the town. Mallow is part of the Cork East Dáil constituency. Name The earliest form of the name is ''Magh nAla'', meaning "plain of the stone". In the anglicisation "Mallow", ''-ow'' originally represented a reduced schwa sound (), which is now however pronounced as a full vowel .
