Waterboat House Garden
Waterboat House Garden is a small park located near the mouth of the Singapore River, near the Central Business District (CBD) in Singapore. The park was once the original site of the former Merlion Park where the two iconic statues of the Merlion and its miniature form were originally located. History Launch The first Merlion Park was originally located near the mouth of the Singapore River was designed by the Singapore Tourism Board as an emblem of Singapore in 1964. The park was officially opened at an installation ceremony for the Merlion statue, officiated at by then Prime Minister of Singapore, Mr Lee Kuan Yew on 15 September 1972. The original statues of the Merlion and its mininature used to stand at the mouth of the Singapore River with Anderson Bridge as its background. The main statue was made from November 1971 to August 1972 by the late Singaporean sculptor, Mr Lim Nang Seng. Singapore River
The Singapore River is a river that flows parallel to Alexandra Road and feeds into the Marina Reservoir in the southern part of Singapore. The immediate upper watershed of the Singapore River is known as the Singapore River Planning Area, although the western part of the watershed is classified under the River Valley planning area. Singapore River planning area sits within the Central Area of the Central Region of Singapore, as defined by the Urban Redevelopment Authority. Marina Bay is a bay located in the Central Area of Singapore, surrounded by the perimeter of four other planning areas, the Downtown Core, Marina East, Marina South and Straits View. Waterboat House
The Fullerton Waterboat House, originally known as the Water House, is a historic water supply house formerly used to supply fresh water to incoming ships in Singapore. The former Water House was gazetted for conservation in 2002 and has since reopened as a restaurant. History Singapore was established as a trading port in February 1819, Francis James Bernard, the son-in-law to Major William Farquhar, was appointed as the first Master Attendant with an office at the mouth of the Singapore River to control shipping. In April 1820, Captain William Lawrence Flint, the brother-in-law to Sir Stamford Raffles, was appointed as the second Master Attendant. Merlion Park
Merlion Park ( ms, Taman Merlion, zh, 鱼尾狮公园, ta, மெர்லயன் பூங்கா) is a famous Singapore landmark and a major tourist attraction, located at One Fullerton, Singapore, near the Central Business District (CBD). Lim Nang Seng
Lim Nang Seng (1917 - 17 November 1987) was a Singaporean sculptor. He sculpted the Merlion statue in Merlion Park. Biography Lim was born in 1917 in Singapore. Lim originally worked as a schoolteacher. Sculpting initially began as a hobby of his, which he later turned into his career. In 1967, Lim held the first sculpture show in Singapore with five other sculptors, and designed the 1967 Singapore coin collection. Prior to 1971, he had spent two weeks in a carpark along Orchard Road sculpting ''Dancing Girl'', a sculpture, which was then installed at the Seng Poh Garden in Tiong Bahru. The sculpture received mixed reception from the local residents, as some thought it was too abstract or too closely resembled a swan. However, Lim was not upset by this, as he believed that swans were prosperous animals. In 1970, he won three prizes in a handicraft and design exhibition.
