Water skiing was one of two demonstration sports at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich Munich ( ; german: München ; bar, Minga ) is the capital and most populous city of the German state of Bavaria. With a population of 1,558,395 inhabitants as of 31 July 2020, it is the third-largest city in Germany, after Berlin and Ha .... It was the only time that the sport was demonstrated at any Olympic Games. 35 participants from 20 countries took part in six events: slalom, figure skiing, and ski jump for each of men and women skiers. The slalom events took place on September 1 and the figure skiing and ski jump events took place on September 2. Water Skiing
Water skiing (also waterskiing or water-skiing) is a surface water sport in which an individual is pulled behind a boat or a cable ski installation over a body of water, skimming the surface on two skis or one ski. The sport requires sufficient area on a stretch of water, one or two skis, a tow boat with tow rope, two or three people (depending on local boating laws), and a personal flotation device. In addition, the skier must have adequate upper and lower body strength, muscular endurance, and good balance. There are water ski participants around the world, in Asia and Australia, Europe, Africa, and the Americas. In the United States alone, there are approximately 11 million water skiers and over 900 sanctioned water ski competitions every year. Australia boasts 1.3 million water skiers. Patricia Marilyn Messner, (born 1954) is Canada's only Olympic medallist in water skiing. Born in Hamilton, Ontario, she won the bronze medal in women's slalom at the 1972 Summer Olympics, though as it was a demonstration sport that year they are not included in the medal table. After the Olympics, she won 4 world championship medals, including the gold medal in women's slalom in 1979. She won 18 Canadian champion titles from 1965 to 1979. Willy Stähle
Willy Juana Stähle (16 June 1954 – 27 August 2015) was a Dutch world water skiing champion. As a young child, Stähle lived in Venezuela, where she learned water skiing from her father. Back in the Netherlands, the family lived in Bergen and she went to school in Alkmaar. In 1968 she won her first Dutch national championship water skiing. The next year, at the age of 15, she won her first European championship, and in 1971 her one world championship, in the trick discipline. For that achievement she became the Dutch Sportswoman of the Year in 1971. Stähle won a gold and a silver medal at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich for women's figure skiing and slalom, respectively; however, Olympic water skiing was considered a demonstration sport at the time and her medals did not go toward the official count.
