Water Street Historic District (Eau Claire, Wisconsin)
The Eau Claire Water Street Historic District was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2007. Description Contributing buildings in the district were constructed from 1882 to 1885. Records remain of buildings on Water Street dating back at least as far as 1857, one year after the founding of West Eau Claire, about one half mile to the north. Eau Claire (; ) (French for "clear water") is a city mostly located in Eau Claire County, Wisconsin, of which it is the county seat, and with a small portion in Chippewa County, Wisconsin. It had a population of 69,421 in 2020, making it the state's eighth-largest city. Eau Claire is the principal city of the Eau Claire, Wisconsin Metropolitan Statistical Area, locally known as the Chippewa Valley, and is also part of the larger Eau Claire-Menomonie Combined Statistical Area. Eau Claire is at the confluence of the Eau Claire and Chippewa Rivers on traditional Ojibwe, Dakota, and Ho-Chunk land. The area's first permanent European American settlers arrived in 1845, and Eau Claire was incorporated as a city in 1872. The city's early growth came from its extensive logging and timber industries. The ''Eau Claire Leader-Telegram'' (founded in 1881) is a newspaper published in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, by Adams Publishing Group. It is read throughout Eau Claire County and surrounding counties.
