Water Polo At The 1912 Summer Olympics
The 1912 Summer Olympics in Stockholm saw the fourth water polo tournament at Olympics. All games took place in the newly built swimming stadium in Djurgårdsbrunnsviken from 7 to 16 July 1912. All medals were decided by using the Bergvall system. Medal summary The competitions in water polo were arranged on the Cup Tie (elimination) system, but in such a way that the necessary number of matches had to be played for the second and third prizes between the teams qualified to take part in these rounds. The principle was adopted that a team which had not been beaten, direct or indirect, by a team that was qualified to fight for the second or third prize, should have the right to play against the team last-mentioned, even if it (the first-named) had already been beaten by some other team. Djurgårdsbrunnsviken
Djurgårdsbrunnsviken is a bay in central Stockholm, Sweden, together with the canal Djurgårdsbrunnskanalen forming the northern shore line of the island Djurgården (or more correctly between Northern and Southern Djurgården). Harald Julin
Harald Sigfrid Alexander Julin (27 March 1890 – 31 July 1967) was a Swedish swimmer and water polo player who competed at the 1906, 1908, 1912 and 1920 Olympics. In 100 m freestyle swimming he won a bronze medal in 1908, and failed to reach the finals in 1906 and 1912; he finished fifth in the 4×250 m freestyle relay in 1906. In water polo he won bronze medals in 1908 and 1920 and a silver at the 1912 Summer Olympics in his native Stockholm. His sons Åke and Rolf also became Olympic water polo players. Julle came from a rich family. Besides water sports he was a fan of motor racing, working as a secretary of the Royal Automobile Club and helping organize several racing events. Félicien Courbet (25 February 1888 – 20 December 1967) was a Belgian water polo player and breaststroke swimmer who competed in the 1908 Summer Olympics, in the 1912 Summer Olympics, and in the 1920 Summer Olympics. He was part of the Belgian water polo team in 1912, which won a bronze medal. In 1908, 1912 and 1920 he also participated in all breaststroke events, but without being able to take part in a final. Oscar Grégoire Jr. (26 March 1877 in Ivanteyevka, Moscow Oblast, Russian Empire – 28 September 1947 in Brussels) was a Belgian water polo player and backstroke swimmer who competed in the 1900 Summer Olympics, in the 1908 Summer Olympics, and in the 1912 Summer Olympics. Herman Meyboom (23 August 1889, in Surabaya – after 1912) was a Belgian water polo player and freestyle swimmer who competed in the 1908 and 1912 Summer Olympics. Meyboom is the youngest male Olympic silver medalist in water polo. On 22 July 1908, he won an Olympic silver medal at the age of 18 years and 334 days. Victor Boin
Victor Boin (28 February 1886 – 31 March 1974) was a Belgian freestyle swimmer, water polo player, and épée fencer who competed at the 1908, 1912 and 1920 Summer Olympics. Olympics Boin was part of the Belgian water polo teams that finished second in 1908 and third in 1912. In 1908 he also participated in the 100 metre freestyle swimming competition, but was eliminated in the first round. As a fencer he finished fourth in the individual épée competition in 1912. In 1920 he was eliminated in the first round of the individual épée event, but won a silver medal in the team épée event. Boin took the first ever Olympic Oath at the 1920 Games in Antwerp, where he was also the Belgium flag bearer at the Opening Ceremony. Herman Louis Clement Donners (5 August 1888 – 14 May 1915) was a Belgian water polo player who competed in the 1908 Summer Olympics and in the 1912 Summer Olympics. He was part of the Belgian water polo team and won a silver and a bronze medal. Personal life and death Donners was born in Antwerp, Belgium, son of Jean Henri Edmond Donners and his wife Celene Helene Joseph (''nee'' Verspreuwen). Erik Bergqvist
Erik Gustaf "Berka" Bergqvist (20 June 1891 – 17 February 1954) was a Swedish water polo player and freestyle swimmer who competed in the 1912 and 1920 Summer Olympics, as well as an international footballer. He was part of the Swedish water polo teams that won silver and bronze medals, respectively. In 1912 he also competed in the 100 metre freestyle. As a swimmer and water polo player, he represented Stockholms KK. Besides water sports, Bergqvist won a Swedish football title with AIK as a goalkeeper. He also football played for IFK Stockholm. He was one of three founders of the company AB Tipstjänst, which in 1934 received the state license to organize gambling and betting in sport, as those were going out of control in the 1920s–30s. The company was nationalized in 1943, and Bergqvist was offered the post of its Director General, on condition that he joins the Swedish Social Democratic Party. Kletus Vilhelm "Wille" Andersson (11 March 1891 – 21 September 1933) was a Swedish water polo player and freestyle swimmer. He competed in water polo at the 1908, 1912, 1920 and 1924 Summer Olympics and won a silver medal in 1912 and a bronze in 1920, finishing fourth in 1924. In swimming he competed at the 1908 and 1912 Olympics and won 18 national titles between 1909 and 1920. He was the son of Cletus William Andersson, a dentist. His younger brother Erik Cletus Thule Andersson also competed in water polo at the 1924 Olympics.
