Wasserkuppen Rhön
The Wasserkuppen Rhön or Wasserkuppenrhön, named after its highest peak, also the highest summit in the entire Rhön Mountains, the Wasserkuppe (), is an exposed highland ridge and natural region in the Hesse, Hessian county of Fulda (district), Fulda and Bavarian county of Rhön-Grabfeld. Together with the Long Rhön and its Eastern flank of the Long Rhön, eastern flank it forms the Central Rhön. The Red Moor (Rhön), Red Moor lies within this natural region. Wasserkuppe
The is a mountain within the German state of Hesse. It is a large plateau formation at an elevation of and is the highest peak in the Rhön Mountains. Great advances in sailplane development took place on the mountain during the interwar period, driven by annual contests. Near the summit there is still an airfield used by gliding clubs and pilots of light aircraft. Etymology The German name is derived from ''Wasenkuppe, Asenberg'' or ''Weideberg'' and means ''Pasture mountain''. Geography The Wasserkuppe lies in the administrative district Fulda north of Gersfeld. Other villages nearby are Poppenhausen ( west - south west) and Wüstensachsen ( east, part of Ehrenberg, Hesse). It is part of the Rhön Biosphere Reserve. The Wasserkuppe sources the spring of the river Fulda (the western source of the Weser) and the river Lütter which joins the Fulda after . Ehrenberg is a municipality in the district of Fulda, in Hesse, Germany. Gersfeld (Rhön)
Gersfeld is a town in the district of Fulda, in Hesse, Germany. It is situated on the Fulda River, in the Rhön Mountains, southeast of Fulda. It belonged to the abbey-principality of Fulda before secularisation in 1803. It then belonged to the Principality of Nassau-Orange-Fulda between 1803 and 1806, to France between 1806 and 1810, and then later to the Grand Duchy of Frankfurt between 1810 and 1813. After the Battle of Leipzig, it was occupied by the Allied troops of the Sixth Coalition between 1813 and 1815. After that, it was ceded to the Kingdom of Bavaria in 1815. During the Austro-Prussian War, it was occupied by Prussia before its annexation in the newly established Hesse Nassau province. It was finally incorporated in the state of Hesse in 1945.
