The 1884 Washington Nationals were a baseball team belonging to the Union Association. They were managed by Michael Scanlon and finished in seventh place with a record of 47–65. Their home games were played at Capitol Grounds. The Nationals folded with the rest of the Union Association when it was discontinued after 1884, its only season of operation. This team is distinct from the other 1884 Washington Nationals franchise, a different team that played in the American Association the same year. Baseball is a bat-and-ball sport played between two teams of nine players each, taking turns batting and fielding. The game occurs over the course of several plays, with each play generally beginning when a player on the fielding team, called the pitcher, throws a ball that a player on the batting team, called the batter, tries to hit with a bat. Union Association
The Union Association was a league in Major League Baseball which lasted for just the 1884 season. St. Louis won the pennant and joined the National League the following season. Seven of the twelve teams who were in the Association at some point during the season did not play a full schedule: four teams folded during the season and were replaced, while Chicago moved to Pittsburgh in late August. History The league was founded in September 1883 by the young St. Louis millionaire Henry Lucas, who was eventually named the league's president, with owner Tom Pratt of the Philadelphia franchise serving as vice-president and Warren W. White of the Washington franchise as secretary. Michael Scanlon (baseball)
Michael B. Scanlon (November 1843 – January 18, 1929) was an Irish-American professional baseball manager. Scanlon served as manager for two major league teams; the 1884 Washington Nationals of the Union Association and the 1886 Washington Nationals of the National League. In 196 games as a manager, he won 60 games and lost 132 games for a .313 winning percentage. The Washington Nationals of 1884 were a short-lived baseball team in the American Association. They won 12 games and lost 51. Their home games were played at Athletic Park in Washington, D.C. They were also known as the Washington Statesmen. The Nationals were managed for all but one game by former player Holly Hollingshead. John Bickerton managed their final game on August 2, 1884, a loss to the New York Metropolitans. Their top hitter was shortstop Frank Fennelly, who went 75-for-257, a batting average of .292. By far their best pitcher was Bob Barr, who was 9-23 with an ERA of 3.46. The Washington Nationals are an American professional baseball team based in Washington, D.C.. They compete in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a member of the National League (NL) East division. From 2005 to 2007, the team played in RFK Stadium while a new stadium was being built. In 2008, they moved in to Nationals Park, located on South Capitol Street in the Southeast quadrant of D.C., near the Anacostia River.
