Washington Missourian
The ''Washington Missourian'' is the Franklin County newspaper based in Washington, Missouri. The paper is owned by Missourian Publishing Company, a family-owned company. James L. Miller, Sr. purchased the paper in 1937. In addition to news stories in Washington, the paper covers the nearby cities of Union, St. Clair, and Pacific, as well as local stories from the surrounding areas. It is the most read local paper inside Franklin County and is available and read in many St. Louis County cities, such as Eureka. The paper contains obituaries from as far back as 1939. History The ''Washington Missourian'' started in 1860 as the ''Franklin County-Gazette'' and received its name change in 1926. The Miller Family has owned the company since purchasing it in 1937 and delivers the newspaper bi-weekly. Washington is a city on the south banks of the Missouri River, 50 miles west of St. Louis, Missouri, and the largest in Franklin County, Missouri, United States. The county was organized in 1818 and is named after Founding Father Benjamin Franklin. Union is a city in and the county seat of Franklin County, Missouri, United States. It is located on the Bourbeuse River, southwest of St. Louis. The population was 10,204 at the 2010 census, with the city showing the highest growth rate (32%) in Franklin County over the previous decade. Saint Clair is a city in Franklin County, Missouri, United States. The population was 4,472 at the 2010 census. Geography Saint Clair is located between the Meramec River to the southeast and the Bourbeuse River to the northwest. Interstate 44 passes along the northwest side of the city and Missouri Routes 30 and 47 both pass through the city. Union is approximately six miles north along Route 47 and Stanton is about eight miles to the southwest on I-44. Parkway is on Route 30, just southeast of the city. Pacific (formerly Franklin) is a city in the U.S. state of Missouri in eastern Franklin County and extending to the east into southwest St. Louis County. The population was 7,002 at the 2010 census. History Early history (1820-1864) Throughout the early 19th century, the area that would eventually become Pacific slowly developed, with the first log cabin being constructed in 1820 and a covered bridge across the nearby Meramec River being constructed in 1838. The Town of Franklin, Missouri was platted in 1852 by Major William C. Inks. The following year, the Pacific Railroad laid tracks in the town, and the railroad opened on July 19, 1853.
