Washington's 27th Legislative District
Washington's 27th legislative district is one of forty-nine districts in Washington state for representation in the state legislature. The district includes most of northern Tacoma. The district's legislators are state senator Yasmin Trudeau and state representatives Laurie Jinkins (position 1) and Jake Fey (position 2), all Democrats. Jinkins is the current Speaker of the House. It is a bicameral body, composed of the lower Washington House of Representatives, composed of 98 Representatives, and the upper Washington State Senate, with 49 Senators plus the Lieutenant Governor acting as president. Tacoma ( ) is the county seat of Pierce County, Washington, United States. A port city, it is situated along Washington's Puget Sound, southwest of Seattle, northeast of the state capital, Olympia, Washington, Olympia, and northwest of Mount Rainier National Park. Laurie Jinkins
Laurie A. Jinkins (born August 1964) is an American politician, attorney, and public health official from Tacoma, Washington who serves as a member of the Washington House of Representatives from the 27th district. A Democrat, she has served as Speaker of the House since January 2020. Early life and education Jinkins grew up in the rural Midwest and attended the University of Wisconsin–Madison, where she earned both bachelor's and master's degrees. She moved to Washington State in 1987 to attend the University of Puget Sound School of Law (now affiliated with Seattle University), earning a Juris Doctor (J.D.) in 1990. Jacob Carl Fey (born 1949) is an American politician serving as a member of the Washington House of Representatives, representing the 27th district. A member of the Democratic Party, Fey assumed office on January 14, 2013. Early life and education Fey was born and raised in Port Angeles, Washington. The Washington Redistricting Commission is a decennial body charged with redrawing congressional and legislative districts in the state of Washington after each census. On November 8, 1983, Washington state passed the 74th amendment to its constitution via Senate Joint Resolution 103 to permanently establish the Redistricting Commission. Earlier that year the first commission redrew the state's congressional map after the previous one drawn by the legislature was ruled unconstitutional.
