Warwick General Cemetery
Warwick General Cemetery is a heritage-listed cemetery at Wentworth Street, Warwick, Queensland, Warwick, Southern Downs Region, Queensland, Australia. It was designed by Dornbusch & Connolly and built from 1853 onwards by Phil Thornton. It was added to the Queensland Heritage Register on 27 April 2001. History The first section of the Warwick General Cemetery was surveyed in 1850, when the town of Warwick was officially laid out, and the earliest burial is understood to have been in 1853. Warwick General Cemetery is located to the west of the Warwick central business district, on an elevated area near a bend in the Condamine River. The Shire of Warwick was a local government area in the Darling Downs region of Queensland, Australia. The administrative centre and major town of the shire was the town of Warwick. History On 19 March 1992, the Electoral and Administrative Review Commission, created two years earlier, produced its report ''External Boundaries of Local Authorities'', and recommended that local government boundaries in the Warwick area be rationalised into three new local government areas. That recommendation was not implemented, but the City of Warwick was merged with the Shires of Allora, Glengallan and Rosenthal to form the new Shire of Warwick. The Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) is an intergovernmental organisation of six independent member states whose principal function is to mark, record and maintain the graves and places of commemoration of Commonwealth of Nations military service members who died in the two World Wars. Andrew Lang Petrie (25 June 1854 – 1 April 1928) was a builder, stonemason and politician in Queensland, Australia. He was a Member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Personal life Andrew Lang Petrie was born in Brisbane on 25 June 1854,Queensland Registrar-General of Births, Deaths and Marriages the eldest son of John Petrie and Jane Keith McNaught.
