Warren Sprout
Warren Austin Sprout (February 3, 1874 – August 23, 1945) was an American sport shooter who competed in the 1912 Summer Olympics. In 1912, he won the gold medal as member of the American team in the team military rifle competition as well as two bronze medals in the team 25 metre small-bore rifle event and in the team 50 metre small-bore rifle competition. In the 1912 Summer Olympics he also participated in the following events: * 50 metre rifle, prone - twelfth place * 600 metre free rifle - 14th place * 25 metre small-bore rifle - 17th place * 300 metre free rifle, three positions - 32nd place * 300 metre military rifle, three positions - 37th place He was born in Picture Rocks, Pennsylvania and died in Westfield, New Jersey Westfield is a town in Union County, New Jersey, United States, located southwest of Manhattan. Picture Rocks is a borough in Lycoming County, Pennsylvania, United States. The 2020 census measured the population at 640. It is part of the Williamsport, Pennsylvania Metropolitan Statistical Area. Notable person Picture Rocks is the birthplace of Warren Sprout, who won a shooting gold medal at the 1912 Olympics. History Picture Rocks was incorporated as a borough on September 27, 1875 from land formerly included in Wolf Township. However, its recorded history began a century earlier. The earliest settlers arrived in 1773 and observed Indian pictographs (no longer extant) in the Muncy Creek valley. The borough occupies the site of a Munsee Indian village, evidenced by arrowheads and other relics found in the vicinity of the creek. The Province of Pennsylvania issued the first warrant for property in the Picture Rocks area to Henry Rody on June 3, 1773. The men's 300 m rifle three positions was a shooting sports event held as part of the shooting at the 1912 Summer Olympics programme. It was the third appearance of the event, which had been introduced in 1900. The competition was held on Tuesday, 2 July 1912. Eighty-four sport shooters from nine nations competed. The event was won by Paul Colas of France, the nation's first medal in the event. Denmark took the silver and bronze medals, as Lars Jørgen Madsen (in his third time competing in the event) finished second and Niels Larsen placed third. Background This was the third appearance of the men's 300 metre three-positions rifle event, which was held 11 times between 1900 and 1972.The event was open to women in 1968 and 1972.
